I'm guessing you were the one dumping sand in people's hair in the playground... Perhaps you were lucky enough to never get made fun of as a child but it can be really damaging. I am not saying that there should be no teasing at all, but there is a big difference between playful name calling and unacceptable behavior. Once someone crosses the line, they need to be beaten about the head and shoulders. At least back in the day, no one acted out because the nuns would beat you. It somewhat kept people in check. (and if the nuns didn't beat you, your parents would smack the hell out of you for being disrespectful).
I am not saying we need to overreact to everything but to say that words are not damaging is just plan ignorant.
