Keep in mind that most sets of clubs are only irons...

You can get a decent set of irons for like $700-$800...but then you need to buy your woods, which can cost around $200 a piece...

You definitely should go to a store, maybe golftown, and try out some clubs. Find out what is the right thing for you. Graphite Shaft, rifle shaft etc. and the type of flex of the shaft, depending on how hard you swing.

Finding the right club is very important as I do find that a proper set of clubs can dramatically improve your game.

I lent my clubs to this golfer chick.
She pulled out my wood, grabbed it by the shaft, gripped it too tight, and she turned out to be a hooker. Terrible stroke.

It never ceases to amaze me the people who are willing to drop ludicrous amounts of money on equipment when they don't even know how to use it properly yet.

If you got the money, why not.

But to be honest, for golf, you can by the top of the line equipment, but if you don't learn how to properly swing and practice, it won't help you one bit.

In all honestly, I can hit the top of the line Taylor Made/Ping/Calloway iron pretty much the same distance as one that costs 1/10 of the price. The difference is in the more technical aspects such as draw/fade, spin, trajectory etc.

Duh. That applies to pretty much every sport.

so if i have the money to spend and am willing to put the time in to learn the game...is it worth it to buy good clubs right away? Is is possible to decide what kinda of clubs ill need with such little experience?

Go with custom fitted clubs: they will be made and fine-tuned according to your swing plane, swing speed, grip, and body structure (e.g. height). You really ought to start off on the correct foot by playing with the proper clubs! You could, for instance, get a decent set of custom fitted irons for about $500.

Hey... just curious... what's in everybody's bag? (or should I make a thread for that?)

I have a Wilson mallet putter, Titlelist DCI 962 irons, Adams Tight Lies 3 and 5 woods, and I usually play without a driver, since I'd rather play for accuracy than distance.

... and Justin.... I knew you were experienced from the pics of you driving form.
