how would a mod pass judgement on whether someone was a 'jackoff' or legitimate before their first post?

If they're on AOL they'll just get through or if they don't have a static IP. Try an ISP ban. weee

Swamps or whoever could close registration for a given time. I've been on several boards where they do that.

They used to do it all the time, and I know Neo did a lot of it. They were able to spot a regular user, a spambot, or an alt. Hell, the reason that we have more noticeable spambots and alts now than when I joined is because they stopped doing that.

IP bans are pretty useless since almost everyone knows about proxy sites.
Proxy site (different IP)+ new free hotmail account = new account for message boards.

(speculation from here on)
Nou's final fiasco was some mod doing an IP range ban, which blocked off a certain region/territory's connection to TA. Some other TAs who were within this region were also banned and Nou came on here to explain and i laughed.

That's why IP bans are not an option.

As for approving users, I believe there are way too many users to be approved, so there's no way Swamper can take care of this manually.

We'd need to hire the Italian army for that job :p
