hey guys
im playing my first gig in a few days from now. i currently spin on my laptop with an external mixer. the crowd that will be attending is a mixed crowd. they want mostly dancy music and hip hop. very general dancefloor music. by dany music i mean songs like lady by modjo and so on. something everyones heard basically. i would greatly greatly greatly appreciate your input on what tracks i should play that will please the crowd. since this is my first time djing at a party, ( its a golden oppurtunity for me) i would really appreciate some suggestions and tips from you guys so i can be prepared when i go there. any tips you guys have for first timers and specifically any songs you guys can mention that i dload or purchase to get crowd on the floor.
any remixes of popular songs, any good dancefloor hip hop music and any other songs you guys think the crowd might like...please help me out guys...i would greatly appreciate help and input from you experienced djs...thank you guys so much
much appreciated

| I'd find some remixes of top40s. Proper Education is also a good tune to play for these kind of crowds. |

There have been two or three threads like this over the past few weeks and there has been a lot of great input on them. So I recommend doing a search.
In general though, as much as it pains me to say it, check out the playlist on some hip-hop/top-40 radio station's website and start with that.
I'm not sure what program on your laptop, but if it is Ableton and if you can throw a midi controller in there, you can actually pull off a mix for a crowd that's not half bad. Start with some uber-popular uber-bassy hip-hop song to get people moving (generally 90-100 BPM range). Play a few of those. You can map your midi controller to the master tempo and slowly turn it up over the next few songs. These songs can be more like remixes of popular tracks. (Check out Richard Vission's web site. He's got some killer freebies.) At this point you're ready to drop in some house. You can stick with that for a couple tracks then reverse the process and bring the tempo back down. Lather, rinse, repeat. That should at least keep you interested in the mix.
Note: you don't have to be using ableton to pull this off. that's just the program that I am the most familiar with. (I generally try to avoid mixing by software. But it works well when you're DJing for crowds where neither you nor them give a damn.) |

good luck buddy, I did a couple recently, and one of them was a total mixed crowd. Remember, you cant please everyone, so your bound to have several whiney bastards or drunk chicks ask u for tracks u just wont have or heard of. either way try and get a-hold of the mix of JT's what goes around, thats relatively new and mark oliver spun it nicely last time i was in Toronto. Other than that bring loads of variety to please everyone. have fun!

Dont play what everyone else plays man, No matter what they say.
Go so searches on beat port find tracks you never heard and songs that no ones plays. You have to develop a unique style man |

I agree to some extent, but...if a guy who knows what to play in normal situation where the crowd goes to an event which is in his style...then he should know what to play...
In case you want to take a gig just the kicks and you have to play for a top40 crowd its not a terrible think to ask others to help :)
EDIT: I dont' make much sense here, do I? |
