:wtf: Ok, that was random.

hey dude, good on you for wanting to contribute to help others.

Here's a cause I donated to a few days ago.

quote:

Can you imagine your life without books, newspapers, magazines, or comic books? We can’t. Do you remember your first book with brightly colored drawings of familiar things? So do we. Unfortunately, many Lao village kids have never seen one, let alone owned one. The story of how Annelene and Jo met is too long to tell. Suffice to say that we found ourselves in the same place at the same time and in a country where even those who are lucky enough to have held a school textbook have not had the chance to spark their imagination by reading a children’s story of urchins, fairies, or other flights of fancy.

Although there are libraries in the larger towns, most village children do not have access to them - their villages are too remote and their workdays too long. So, if we can’t bring the kids to the libraries, we’ll just have to bring the library to the kids! Because many Lao villages haven’t seen a road, the books we want to deliver will get the deluxe treatment, on the river, in traditional Lao-style. Yes, that’s right – we’re hoisting the sails of a Floating Library in the hope of bringing books to the children and fun into reading!

I've been a complete selfish cvnt basically. Everything has been handed to me on a silver platter throughout my entire life. I'm already an organ donor but that's about as far as I've gone.

I'm making a rule for myself to give blood once a year. I'm going in next monday when all the alcohol has cleared out. :p

So that's all well and good... but I feel like I need to do something more. I've been considering doing a shift at a homeless shelter or chilling out with sick children, but maybe there are better places my efforts can go? I thought about sponsoring a child, but that just seems like such a waste of money; cherry picking one person will make little difference, and offers the society a pretty poor return for the amount of money invested. I considered making donations to charities but most of them are just money sucking black holes.

Any ideas? I want to donate a considerable ammount of money (for an unemployed uni student) to a charity that will actually put most of it towards education and infrastructure in the really fvcked up countries that need it most... Not considering local charities at all; Australia has minimal problems, most of which are of it's own making.
2 years volunteer work somewhere...

thats what im doing:toocool:

oh and if you want to volunteer there's lots of charities and worthwhile causes around. I collected some volunteering links not too long ago. Will dig them up for you.

Go to your local hospital. They're always short handed there.

Donate money to the Red Cross.

don't say spending time with one kid is a waste
thats like saying your one vote is a waste, it does nothign in the big picture

i work at a pool during the summer and the town camps come every day to go swimming. its mostly underpriviledged kids, kids with add, kids with working parents, or with other problems. for years we had this one kid mark who had major anger problems. he was like 10 and starting fights over nothing every day, and he hated himself for it.
one of the councilers was a one-on-one with him during the school year, she helped him through things and was there for him 24/7, didn't have a peachy home life as you might expect. anyways, he was actually doing better and in 6th grade and going to graduate into middle school in a few months when all hell broke loose.
the counciler and another one who were pretty much the only people who he'd actualyl talk to and who actually got him moved away after getting awesome job offers, though he still had both of their phone numbers. a few months later, a few months short of graduating he pretty much flipped, threatening to kill himself, and after that and a few other things he was expelled from his school, all the while the only thing he'd say was 'i want to talk to danai and peter' (two councilers)
the school's guidance people were supposed to have their phone numbers, but never called them. we don't know where he is anymore, and the kid everyone thought was a lost cause, who then two great people proved that he wasn't, turned into a lost cause again

heard this from danai (the counciler) a few days back when i ran into her, i've been in a ty mood ever since, he was a good kid:(

^^ all kids are good. it's their environment that s them up.

that's a sad story dude. hope he's alright.

i always do things that i have a passion in, so think of something that you really want to achieve and do it.
At work we get some of the patients to knit little jumpers, beanies and booties for children that are born in africa because most children who lucky enough to be born in a medical facility go home wrapped in news paper :(

So i spend most of my free time at work knitting little things for these children, little things like this do make a difference to someone out there.
