She's a softy :)

I used to donate a bit to various African charities which where providing agricultural, clean water assistance and didn't have high administration overheads.

I'm waiting til I'm on my feet before helping anyone. Selfish in the short run but better in the long.

I've been a complete selfish cvnt basically. Everything has been handed to me on a silver platter throughout my entire life. I'm already an organ donor but that's about as far as I've gone.

I'm making a rule for myself to give blood once a year. I'm going in next monday when all the alcohol has cleared out. :p

So that's all well and good... but I feel like I need to do something more. I've been considering doing a shift at a homeless shelter or chilling out with sick children, but maybe there are better places my efforts can go? I thought about sponsoring a child, but that just seems like such a waste of money; cherry picking one person will make little difference, and offers the society a pretty poor return for the amount of money invested. I considered making donations to charities but most of them are just money sucking black holes.

Any ideas? I want to donate a considerable ammount of money (for an unemployed uni student) to a charity that will actually put most of it towards education and infrastructure in the really fvcked up countries that need it most... Not considering local charities at all; Australia has minimal problems, most of which are of it's own making.

why not give it to your aborigines? after all, you're on their land. don't you feel any moral obligation to them?

Well... that wasn't my point...

I meant I could spend $100 and make like 0.0000000001% difference if donated towards aborigines etc. But that same $100 would feed someone in uganda for a year. I want whatever I do to make as big of an impact as possible.

Oxfam... Can I believe the green pie chart? I have had bad experiences with green pie charts... :(

donating blood is such an easy thing to do, and is SOOOOOO helpful to the human population out there. you can donate blood ever 6-8 weeks too. so honestly, you could donate 6-8 times a year, not just once.

Last time i donated, i got a phone call about a week later from the place i donated that said my donation had saved a life. it was pretty neat to hear.

Like others have said, check your local shelters/youth groups/churches etc.... for volunteer work. Your local Red Cross Unit has so many classes you can take like CPR, Life Guarding, emergency response, etc... you can take to help serve your community.

Donations don't always have to be in money too. clothing is a huge thing, especially for the salvation army. local schools that are maybe lacking state funding or something can always use extra school supplies. giving a classroom extra pens and pencils can be *huge* for those kids. seriously. If you want to donate money too, find a cause that you want and basically just google it or ask your local city hall about where / who to contact. Again, it doesn't have to be much - $20 can help someone, somewhere. When Katrina hit, i donated $50 to the Red Cross for those in Mississippi.

congrats on taking up an initiative to do something to help out your local man. :)

There's more to it then that.

Oxfam have a campaign going to push govt to treat indigenous people equally when it comes to health care.

I have donated money especially to charities like MIRA,Funds for Cancer Research, and the Montreal Children's Hospital. Even if it isn't much, i highly suggest donating a little bit to something worthwhile once in awhile. Not only will it make you feel good, but its always good to hedge your bets and have some good stuff on your resume in case there really is a God.
