Well it does and Canadian fans have no bearing on Nielsen ratings so they don't matter in this case. The Rangers are important because they are in the heart of NYC and the NYC metro area is the number one media market in America, Los Angeles is number two but LA fans have proven themselves of being fair weather fans. NHL gets screwed because of their ratings, dropped by ESPN/ABC, getting ok money from Versus and a rev share deal with NBC (which mean they take the adverting money pay for production with it then split the rest 50/50. NBC has a similar deal with the AFL). Television money separates the low level leagues from those in the upper echelon…you can also see this on a team by team basis too(ie Yankees or Red Sox with vs Royals or Brewers).

Seeing that the salary cap is tied to league revenue which is in turn tied to ratings and ratings are tied to number of households watching the NHL don’t you think the team playing in the number one media market is important? When the Rangers won in ’94 there was a noticeable bump in interest nationwide. The Rangers are the second most profitable team in the NHL so they themselves are doing great but I can guarantee you NBC and Gary Bettman are hoping for a New York Rangers – Detroit Red Wings finals rather than a series like this year. Might I also add that one game this year posted the lowest ratings on NBC and I don’t mean for the year or for a Stanley Cup Finals I mean lowest NBC ratings EVER.

that just goes to show you that the NHLs current position has less to do with the rangers than the horrible leadership. Giving OLN tv rights was perhaps the single worst marketing move in sports history. There's no way the NHL is going to capture casual fans by placing the games on some obscure network. Additionally, the move ensured that the league revenue wouldn't increase as much in the short term. Hopefully for the sake of the sport (on a national level) Comcast and the NHL can work out this OLN disaster.

EDIT: I just read that the NHL gets $2 million in reveneue from the OLN for each team for the entire season. The OLN contract amounted to only 3 per cent of the leagues total revenue for 2006. If that's true, then TV ratings have less to do with the salary cap than you think.

I think what you found proves my point, go look into the NFL and see how much of total revenue comes from television money. There is only so much merchandise you can sell and there are a certain number of tickets the league can sell BUT the big money comes from television and with the NHL getting less than 10% of total revenue from television that has to show you there is a problem. Once the league can show better ratings they can go into negotiations with something to offer their potential television partner which in turn should amount to more money. Also did you just look at Versus money? Keep in mind there are a number of other channels like the CBC that pay for the rights to broadcast NHL games.

My point is only that other sources of revenue are far more important for salary cap purposes than TV rights. Hockeys problem is that it isn't very popular in the US, and there is little chance that it will become an overwhelmingly popular sport. Hockey fans for the most part are die-hards....hockey doesn't really have a casual audience. They need to address how to capture that casual audience before anything can improve. And putting the sport on OLN wasn't the right move for that purpose.

not really, free agents have got to go somewhere and since there is a cap not everyone can keep their players

I know how free agency works, Im just sayin that its crazy that players are shuffling all over the place... and so many of them, it looks as if no one wants to resign anyone.

Oh and as far as the ratings thing is concerned... Hockey is like Soccer, very few in the states appreciate it. Why do you think LA Galaxy signed Beckham? Ill give ya a hint, its not for the skills. :p

PS: I didnt watch the stanley cup either, who the wants to watch Anaheim vs. Ottawa...

Well I for one wanted to watch Anaheim and whoever since I wanted Anaheim to win the cup :toothless. Oh I understand why teams sign Beckham, it's not like Real Madrid needed him for anything else but selling merchandise.

I've always liked Zubrus that is a good addition

Huge pick up for the devils.. Rangers went and paid all that money for gomez and we got zubris for half and he puts up the same numbers plus brings some size to the devils that they were lacking. Also the Devils right now are the front runners to bring back Sheldon Souray from the canadians.. Thats huuuuggeee, that will def cover the hit of rafalski leaving. Souray brings size, goal scoring and hes a veteran to the game. I was kinda down on the devils as they were loosing and not replacing but as of now things are on the rise and looks to be a good season ahead of New jersey. Lets go DEVILS!!!!!

gomez will create a better atmosphere that zubrus wont. i believe gomez is a superior player.

souray is a big defensive liability (-28 last season)
Sandman1130
Yeah but his 26 goals as a defensive man and 38 assists is something the devils need. Im not worried about the -28..He brings size and his many years in the league. Devils got pushed around all last year and they never used to be that way. None of the devils last year had anything special as far as +/- to brag about. Adding the three players will be solid and everyone seems to forget we have the best Goalie of all time still!!!
