had a great idea for a track late at night or early in the morning then when you finally wake up and try and remember it again its gone? Only to sit down later trying to write something which just isnt happening? Do any of you get up at the time and try and make notes on the PC or somewhere else or just forget it? Odd questions I know but I'm sure some of you have had this, it would be interesting to find out what you all think.

Happens all the time.

I have a crappy old acoustic guitar. I'm no guitarist, by any means, but I can plink out a tune by ear. When I get a melody in my head I play it out as best I can. The melody coupled with the finger motions helps me remember. Next morning, grab the guitar, try to remember it. It's easy to correct and figure out what I originally played the night before.

On a related note (no pun intended), I find switching to a guitar from a piano to create melodies is sometimes good. I'll end up hitting chords that I wouldn't have otherwise hit.

I think this happens to everyone! I tried recording myself singing the tunes on my mobile so I'd remember it in the morning, but it never quite sounded the same the next morning!
I gave my wife my mobile, but forgot to delete all the voice recordings, and she played them to her brother - it sounded like I was a mentalist singing some stupid tunes!! He thought it was hilarious and played it for everyone at his works who now have me as their ringtones.

Dont do that now for obvious reasons!

yeh i know what u mean, usually a lot of ideas come at night but ur too tired to turn on the computer and work with them. its the worst feeling, being inspired and you cant do anything about it.

this is why I only work at night. early hours of the morning make for some awesome tunes.

the solution is obvious.... you get your phone, set it to voice recorder and hum it in.

i remember reading an article w/ oakenfold who said he went to work with hunter s. thompson for Bunka and that hunter would only work from 2 am to 6 am...
