Vanguard and Nexus from reFX

Hello,
I am new to trance music and have been composing in Logic with only factory samples. I've been very stuck recently since I couldn't get the sounds that I wanted and I don't have much experience with sound design.
I heard the audio demos of Vanguard and was extremely impressed. I also listened to Nexus and was impressed as well. I'd like to buy one of them (and maybe both eventuall), but I don't know which one.
Vanguard is a lot cheaper, and I've heard of it before (I've never heard of Nexus), but Nexus seems to have more sounds, and more expansion packs (esp. trance oriented ones).
What do you guys recommend? One over the other? Both? Which one first?
Thanks,
Connor |

like any hobby conor what you should get and what you're ready for are two totally different things... and unfortunatly you should probably learn one before getting to the other.
how much do you know about synthesis?
vanguard is a great synth for anyone to start on... that and v-station. you'll get all the basics down and really understand how sounds are made.
you should read the stickies because we have outlined a lot of synths for you. |

thanks for your reply!
i have VERY little experience with synthesis
so you think that Vanguard would be better than Nexus for me to start with?
what is v-station?
and sorry, but where are the stickies?
thank you! |

your first set of golf clubs shouldn't be blades they should be the biggest cavity backs in the world and that's because you're not trying to control the ball with exact percision you're just trying to figure out how to even hit the ball. (seriously my best analogy in a long time)
synthesis is like that, if you dont' get the basics down you'll never figure out how to use the bells and whistles of the more intense synths.
google v-station, a lot of us started with that. however if you really have time to learn synthesis grab a book and go get synth1, it's free. if you think synth1 is simple in a week maybe nexus is the next step for you. |

thanks again,
I downloaded v-station and played around with the presets in Logic. I noticed that they sounded of more poor quality (in my opinion) than Vanguard. They sounded like some of the factory presets in Logic. Is that just because I don't know what I'm doing and they'll sound better if I mess with the presets, or is it just a lower quality synth than Vanguard? |

Vanguard is a synth.
Nexus is a rompler. |

| I prefer synths. Romplers are good but I tend to use them as background synths and pads (ala the Korg Wavestation) as their leads become to well known and people's tracks start to sound the same. |

This would be a typical pc user setup. Since he uses logic, ES2 (maybe es1 for some bass once in a while) will be anything he ever needs for his synth needs. ES2 simply blows away Vanguard and it sure is better than V-Station too. Maybe a good rompler like atmosphere for some layered pads is a good addition but that's about it. You better make some investments in sample CDs. |

imo vanguard's sound is too recognizable, and if you plan on using it, make sure u tweak it up and use fx.
nexus is really good, get the expansion packs that are available for it.
however, i find it's kinda hard to find a good sound with nexus, maybe i'm just picky.
in any case, i mainly use FM7, Rapture, z3ta+, and atmosphere |
