Coming from someone who had adult acne, here are some things that worked for me:

1. Don't pick at those pimples unless you want to spread the acne to places you never had acne before! Just apply some tea tree oil or a really good spot treatment. I swear by Avene Diacneal Lotion. I put this on a zit and next morning it's practically gone!

2. Drink plenty of water.

3. Change pillowcases at least once a week

4. Use a gentle scrub and softening mask once a week.

5. Stay away from caffeine, reduce the sodium and fast food intake.

6. For the ladies, don't wear make up 24/7. I stay away from using foundation and reapplying powder..sometimes a bit of oil on your face is actually good!

Invest in some Oil Blotting Tissues too. I use Tea tree oil ones from the Body Shop.

to keep your pores clean, use warm water (which opens the pores) then use a cleaning solution to get the oil and dirt out of the pores. then do a thorough rinse afterwards. do once daily

No, the best acne treatments are the simple ones that people don't bother doing, such as:

(in order of importance)

1. Keeping your hands off your face
2. Drinking lots of water
3. Taking essential fatty acids
4. Changing your pillow case often

Another couple of simple things that you can do is use a proper face soap (dove bar soap is not proper face soap), and moisturize your face after it dries. The reason for this is because regular bar soap dries the out of your face, causing your skin to secrete acne-causing oils in order to moisturize it again. Using a face soap doesn't dry it out as much, and using a moisturizer prevents your face from secreting acne-causing oils.

Most people who start using proper face soaps say that their skin doesn't "feel clean" after they use it. This is because they're so used to getting their skin stripped of all moisture from regular bar soaps.

If after trying to do all of these things that everyone should be doing anyway you're still not getting results, try going to a dermatologist. Proactive works pretty well, but if your acne persists even after using Proactive, use Benzamycin and Retin-A. This is basically the be-all and end-all for acne prevention creams.

I would advise against using antibiotics such as tetracyclin or monocyclin since you may build up an immunity to it, possibly preventing you from being able to use it if you have a surgery down the road.

Also, I really advise against using accutane. I had a pretty bad experience with that drug, and I know others who have too. The side effects can be pretty bad.

as I said, I have 11 years of battling with acne
all those points are helpful yes, but they do not get the acne removed completely, just slightly... monthly break outs still occur

dermotologist should NOT be the last thing to do, it should be the first and foremost thing - consulting a specialist, maybe even doing a blood test too does help a lot... I know, because for the longest time I didn't, and when I did, I saw extensive improvement within the first month

Proactive has way too many negative reviews lately (I actually googled it sometime ago after a recent acne outbreak), and in a number of cases it increased the breakouts

here's my 2 cents. I've HAD it for 10+ yrs myself - wasted too much time and $$ on dermatologists, and to little success. I don't worry about it today - eat what I like, do what I like and go where I want, knowing it won't effect me.

Here's my solution.

MOISTURISE your skin before going to bed. You're probably thinking it'll make your skin oilier and worse. Don't use oil based products out there, but use an entirely water-based cream like Aquaphor or Eucerin, advanced healing cream. It's a water based cream, used to treat severely dry, chapped, scrapped or burnt skin. You may already know, water is a healing agent. Give it a try. Although it may feel sticky on your face going to bed, you'll actually see the results when you wake up. Smooth, soft, clear, healthy looking skin.

after all these years, it sure feels nice not having to worry about what to eat, drink, do etc, just to keep your skin looking good. MOISTURISE!!

anyone not convinced and brave enough, PM me. I'll send you my before and after pics lol

yeah it's a common misconception - oily skin doesn't need moisture... when it's actually the opposite! especially before going to bed, it's def important to put quite a bit of a moisturizing lotion
