from what i hear Seagate and Western Digital seem to be the best.

You answered your own questions.
Seagate has a better warranty btw, but both are quality..... |

| Got a seagate 150gb and i've been taking that all over the place. It's pretty chunky and i've never known it to overheat. |

| Only HDD's I trust wether it be external or internal is WD, Seagates have borked on me way too many times, same with Maxtor. |

Use an external only as a backup.
Rule 1 should be not to keep all your eggs in one basket. If you are keeping all your tunes on an external drive then you should be carrying a second mirrored drive, just in case.

| I would get mirrored RAID external hard drive setup. There are two drives in one enclosure. One is a copy of another. If one fails, the other will take over. This way you are not stuck in the mud during your DJ gig. |

Do you have nay idea what hardware RAID external drives cost? There's also little point, as you should not rely on you external drive as your original material - only a backup.
I can recommend LaCie drives. Many pros use them, and they are very popular amongst mac users due to their reliability. Good range too and not the cheapest but not extortionate. |

| Western digital all the way. Ever since my first seagate stuffed up, about 7 years ago, i've always used western digital ever since. Not 1 has brook on me. I have 7 western digitals in the house and none has given any problems. |

well, my last external hdd was freecom... avoid like the plague
my current external hdd is a 320gb western digital, works well, had no problems with it
also, as already said, lacie make nice drives, usually quite compact in comparison to others that u see too... and very quiet - as for price wise they aren't much different to other hdd's on the market
check out www.dabs.com and www.ebuyer.co.uk for pretty much the lowest prices u are gonna find (other than getting lucky on ebay) lol |

As mentioned before, I'd recommend using external only for backup.
Using an internal drive:
- Eliminates potential trouble points (USB port failure, having an extra thing to plug in [potentially], using up more ports you may need, which may require you to get a USB hub, which adds another potential trouble spot, having computer not recognize the device for some reason, etc.)
- Is faster
- Is less cluttered |
