The Purple Haze alias has its own sound, I agree, but for the most part you can hear similar elements in just about all of his tracks. Maybe I've just listened to him so much, but when he comes out with a new track and I am hearing it for the first time on some other DJs mix, I usually say "That sound's a lot like SvD. Wonder if it's a new track" within seconds of the track coming in and I'm usually right. :)
You hear these familiar elements no matter the style of the track, whether it's trance, techno, or more housey. That's why I love SvD. His style is all over the place from track to track, but in the end it's all well balanced. His sets often have a very similar feel to it.
That's what blew me away. He was moving from house, to trance, to techno, to breaks, to trance, back to house, etc all in his set when I saw him here in SF last year and it all was done so well. Many DJs try to pull it off, but very few succeed. SvD that night flat out destroyed the place because he was making mixing in all the different genres so easily.
Lastly, I am not sure if we'll see any under the Purple Haze, Sam Sharp, etc aliases anymore. Remember reading an interview that he wanted to stop using aliases and just use Sander van Doorn. But then again, it's easy to say that. Some DJs have aliases for a reason....just can't let it get out of hand (ala M.I.K.E. lol) |
