| Just watching it now. Everyone was running eastward...Kinda scary looking. Grand Central station will be affected heavily. Lines 4,5,6 closed temporarily. |

| It looks like a volcanic eruption. The steam is just blasting out of the street... theres a massive whole in the street, atleast half the block is a hole. |

| I work two blocks from there...thankfully i didn't have to work today....4, 5, & 6 bypassing grand central sux!!!! I guess the attendance at the yankees game is going to take a minor hit, considering all the LIRR riders won't be able to get there from GC. |

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A transformer exploded Wednesday afternoon near Manhattan's Grand Central train station, possibly a result of steam underground, New York Police Department told CNN.
A transformer exploded in Manhattan during rush hour Wednesday.
Video from the scene shows what appears to be steam billowing from underground and a small school bus with its windows and a door blown out.
Jim Margolin in the FBI's New York office said there is no indication that there is anything "suspicious" behind the explosion, though the FBI is still collecting information from city agencies and officials.
The New York Fire Department said it received a call reporting an explosion at 5:56 p.m.
More than 170 firefighters have been dispatched to the site at Lexington Avenue near 41st Street.
Subway lines near the explosion have been rerouted to alternate lines bypassing the Grand Central station stop, according to the Metropolitan Transit Authority. |
