Racing/driving sims

I need suggestions for a racing/driving simulator, please. Hardware wise I have the following: Athlon 1600XP, 1GB RAM, 128MB GeForce 6200 on the PC side and a Gamecube on the console side of things. However, with the PS2 being cheap as now, I'm not averse to picking one up if the titles make it worth it.

What'd I prefer: a sim that offers the ability to drive a variety of cars (preferably with a cabin/cockpit view option) in a variety of settings.

I'm sure most will be racing inspired, but I'd really prefer something that would just simulate driving with no particular goal/time/opponent to beat. Just the ability to cruise and blare some good tunes.

Does such a thing exist? Thanks. :D

Well the GTA games are available on just about all platforms. With your specs, I wouldn't recommend one of the newer racing sims on the market as it'll barely run. What about the Need for Speed series?

I haven't played them personally but I heard they're quite fun.

I play this one with the kids almost every night. After a pint of rum, they start winning. :)

I like original Mario Kart for the N64 better than the one for the Game cube.

Keep it simple.

gran turismo 4 for ps2 is probably one of the most realistic racing sims i've played...

if you had an xbox 360 i'd tell you to check out forza motorsport 2 cause that game is phenomenal.

edit: nevermind i can't read.

check out the TOCA series, it should be available for ps2 or pc GTR-FIA for PC is exactly what you want, it just might be perfect for your PC. you are gonna want a wheel likely.

not much for GC, but for all around entertainment and something fun to pick up and play Forza is the best choice. an orig xbox can be had pretty cheap too|

oh i missed the no racing thing...well GTA is it then. microsoft had some sort of game like what you were looking for but it was really boring and GTA is much better. only hardcore racing PC sims will have cockpit view likely...

That's a good one. I'd also reccommend any of the Need for speed series.

Forza for Xbox is pretty sweet.
They actually have licenses with most of the automakers so they can actually display proper graphics. and the physics engine that handles all of the settings are realistic even back to the 1960's ferrari.

It's pretty sweet. They had an amazing write up on it in Popular Science for the first one. I heard the second version is even more realistic. And it it worth getting a steering wheel.
