Absolutely epic movie. I'm ashamed to say I've just seen it today.
I've been on this Africa kick, almost 3 years too late.
Last King of Scotland
Hotel Rwanda (African Schindler's list)
Crossing Borders
etc. |
Add "Tsotsi" to that list, you won't be disappointed |

No, never seen it. Worth grabbing? |
Dude... you gotta get your act together. You need to watch The Departed and Blood Diamond. I can't stand "real life" Leo either, but his acting chops are ing insanely good in both of those movies. It's rediculous. And both movies are great anyway. The Departed is one of the best movies I've seen in the last 10 years. |

I'm stumped. When he was speaking english w/ the commander (the scene after the leader won't let Leo see the commander, takes Leo's cig and blows the smoke back in his face. Leo upset with the quality of diamonds the commander gives, commander then gives Leo diamonds out of tin can, etc.) why the heavy accent? I mean, the commander was even speaking English, too. Just over the top and unnecessary, I think.
And the accent at that point was much different than it had been throughout the entire movie. It was just distracting. Of course not distracting enough to overpower the quality of the film, tho. |
I think he did that because he needed to talk more in their style of slang as a way of relating or being cool with them... I thought it was pretty clever. |

They were speaking Pidgin.
Movies about Africa are usually pretty inaccurate, but they still pwn.
Other movies that haven't been mentioned: "Lumumba" is a true classic, as is "Sometimes in April" - "Tsotsi" was pretty good as well. "The Constant Gardener" is still one of my favorite movies, even though the focus was on white ex-pats. Nirgendwo in Afrika is a better version of Out of Africa (which is an excellent book but somehow won like 10 Oscars too). There are some very good Senegalaise films in French as well. |
