after my post last night.. i didnt really get much further into my project for work, designing lightning bolts for the sides of a car.

i require further help./.. i have downloaded a nice photoshop lightning brush.. but i really need it to be vectorised... whats the best program or serveice for converting image to vector?

sorry for sounding like a nerdy bastard... im not really

Live Trace in Illustrator CS2 is probably your best option.

just create an image in Photoshop with the brush (black against white background), and place the image in a new Illustrator document and select Live Trace from the options bar up top. from there you can adjust the settings until you get it tweaked exactly how you need it, and once you're done it'll be a vector shape.

he should do it straight in Illy

sure you can do live trace but I think it's kinda ty especially for artsy stuff .... I use it mostly to recreate logos at work but still it kinda suckzorz.
ftw trying to print a logo at sizes like 5 feet by 1 when you got a stupid crappy low-ress jpg

nukzi I got some stuff I could send you.
Like typefaces with flame designs etc
I think I may have vectorial shapes as well

if you tweak the settings enough you can get it looking pretty decent. sometimes it sucks, but i'd say about half the time it saves me a lot of time and effort and turns out exactly how i need it.

and it's much better than entirely recreating an image or shape with the pen tool. :p

Jay - here's a video tutorial on that feature if you're unfamiliar with it: http://www.adobe.com//designcenter/...html?id=vid0043

i think this feature was only introduced in CS2, so if you're working with older versions of Photoshop/Illustrator i'm not sure what your options are.

btw, off topic, i sometimes forget Adobe makes Photoshop and Illustrator. when i see Adobe these days, i reference it only for Acrobat Reader. :o

true true

this past week I recreated a wheat branch by live tracing a mega sh*tty jpg that was in a pdf document .... and then I went to work with the artsy illy brush options.

gah the gay stuff I do at work sometimes. I even got to draw a tree! It looks like a child hand drawing and the client validated it.

We should post some of our work. I do really lame stuff cause the clients don't want anything fancy lol

lol i still think of Pagemaker and Freehand as ALDUS products and not ADOBE products. shows you how long ive been around computers. and when Coldfusion was the predominant web content application.

oh gosh I had totally forgotten about the Aldus name. I loved the packaging for pagemaker back in da day

I remember when my dad got a copy on floppy. It was like 15 floppies or something ridiculous like that.

ah great stuff jonathon david toner, and myra :D

been having major problems, as i cant freehand lightning for ... so ive been trying getting photos of lightning, and tracing in corelX3trace or magicwand and trace.. but even if the image is hi res.. the trace on the smaller tributaries of the forks of lightning turn into jagged little bits of crapp looking vector.. and this lighting will be cut out of vinyl and putonto the side of a car... so it does need ot look semi good.

so hopefully ill have a few days to turn this thing around.. so ill try to get my hands on illustrator CS2 [even tho im noobyfied on it]

and jdat any brushes [vector] or any clipart complex lightning bolts would be awesome

thanks :)

EDIT:

btw myra i was led to believe that corelX3's trace was the best and most comprehensive trace tool available right now? have you had any experience with it?

lol, i totally hear ya. i created a logo for a client yesterday that took me half the day to finish and i wasn't happy with it at all. i'm still really bad with the pen tool and since i primarily use Photoshop way more than i use Illustrator, it just frustrated me to no end. i didn't want to spend too much time on it just in case they either loved it or hated it, so i decided to finish it and wait for feedback.

anyway, i ended up sending the logo to them and they loved it. :wtf:
