hardware acceleration cards/boxes like powercore/duende

im considering purchasing one of these cards/boxes that run dedicated dsp/vst effects.
in particular i am interested in the ssl duende. it costs £900 but claims to mimmic perfectly the sound from their flagship mixers.
can anyone with experience in these types of hardware accelerators tell me if they are worth it. there is another company 'ua' or something that seems to have a lot of plugins for their card and i am interested in this one too.
im not particularly interested in a card for synth replication use, but more for the advantages the 'duende' offers like the compressor/channel strip plugins.
are they worth it or will as good plugins be available soon on vst format? |

Steve Helstrip uses UA cards and swears by them.
For whatever that's worth to you. |

| ^^ so does Andy Perring, AKA - Pulser. In my opinion, NOW we have native plugins that are just as good as the dsp based ones - and you don't have to be bothered by latency. (some plugins do induce latency however). The sonnox bundle and the sonalksis plugins are my top picks for sure, when it comes to native plugins - though I really enjoy using waves' Rcomp and the Q10. I'd stick with native plugins if I were you - but then again, Im not. :) |

UA = Universal Audio, they make the UAD-1 among others. I don't have that but I can tell you that a lot of pros use it, and the effects and processors on it are amazing.
I've got a PowerCore, and the main thing I use with it is the Virus. If you don't own an actual Virus, it's pretty sweet. If you do, then take a good look at the other available Powercore plugins and see if they're worth your while before getting one. The reverbs on it are also pretty good, a lot of people (myself included) feel that they're better than the UAD 'verbs, and they're all way better than software reverb, except for the CPU-raping convolution processors.
Both of those products have various compression and channel strip plugins as well, and they're quite good, IMO anyway.
I've actually never heard of this Duende. I'm not sure if I'd want to shell out that kind of money just for some EQ and compression, but I guess I'd have to hear the quality. |

IMO!
If you're signed to a major label and have SUCCESSFUL releases under your belt... yes. If you're kicking in your bedroom on some gaytard e-label... no.
IMO!
There are too many gear whores on this forum. I'm seeing a lot of fancy equipment, but not much good music. I don't think there is a single person on this forum (except Icone, etc.) who should be worrying about whether or not their Waves reverb is good enough lol... It will make 0.05% difference at best. One of the big tunes of this year (hit top 10 on most sites I know) was made using Alesis monitors, SB Audigy, V-Station, Battery 3 and inbuilt Cubase plugins. Seriously... let's get realistic and cut the bs, none of us are pro. Spend your money on drugs and hookers.

Not to mention studios/labels will actually SPONSOR you for your production expenses if you have a fanbase and a market already. But if it takes thousands of dollars to make your music the way you want it, DO IT! |

On the other hand, a lot of people feel that the UAD is better (Steve Helstrip...) Reverb is really about taste, different people like different things. For reverb I'd probably go one of those lexicon PCM whatevers.
Your options for outboad acceleration are basically:
Powercore
UAD
Duende
Focusrite liquidmix.
I like the idea of the liquidmix best, but look at each one and see what it does for you. The powercore and UAD also have the advantage of being more than eq and compressors, but they are bigger and less portable/pretty.
I do agree with what echosystem said tho, native effects usually work fine for me... and unless you already have a rack and everything to set it all up right, I wouldn't bother. I don'thave a rack, no hardware synths or anything like that, and I work on a laptop, so really, these things don't appeal to me. Except the liquidmix:D |

If you purchase the Uad-1 card Rich you can get the neve 88RS channel strip for it and it's very good.
I still say the VSS3 reverb for the poco is fantastic. IMO I own 2 uad-1 cards and a poco and both produce good results.

You're forgetting one thing - this is internet :)
- some people are not who you think they are..
- some people had some major releases under some aliases, and they just don't want the attention.
- Some people are pro's since they may be doing this as a part time or full time job.
- Some people don't post their clips here, because they are signed to major label.
- Some people don't like the attention associated with being a pro - keeping it quiet means less spam mail and novice questions.
- keeping low profile is sometimes a way to go..
- You might be talking to someone here who made a lot of track's you know and like, but they are keeping is a secret..
Anyways. wanted to add this.. :eyes: |
