Crackling Problem
View this Thread in Original format

Hello, I recently produced a trance track, then when i exported it and listened back, some of the layers go distorted and crackle (i definately didn't program them to do so) and for instance, a snare will occassionally sound much louder than i set the volume of it too, i read somewhere that this could be stopped by increasing buffer size, so i did this and it didn't work, so increased the buffer size to full and still I'm getting the crackling distorted sounding problem.. I'm using the ASIO 4 all v2 driver btw, i just wondered if there was anybody who could help me with this problem, i've tried using compressors too but im still getting the crackles :(

This sounds like a rendering problem, not like a soundcard buffer problem... Are you sure your track doesn't clip (volume passes the 0 dB limit). Try setting a maximiser/limiter at the end of ur master track...

What program do you use?
Horīzon
Ahhh my, i just watched the volume levels of it as it was playing, and it goes to +3 at points, i use Cubase SX3 btw, I'm not sure how to set a maximiser or limiter though :S
Eldritch
Try this maximizer. Really good considering it's freeware.
I have no idea why it says hello kitty on the front panel, crazy japanese people, lol. :D

Load the plugin into one of the last two inserts of the master channel. The first 6 inserts are pre-fader and you don't want a limiter or maximizer there.

Thanks for the link man, sorry but I'm a bit of a noob, how do i access the master channel?
Horīzon
Dw i understand it now, it has to go into number 7 or 8 right? on the "out" channel of the mixer, that's where its saying im getting +3 db
lenieNt Force
Ye ur probably right... Im not that familiar with Cubase tho... But if the clipping is gone ur good :)

BuzMaxi is a neat little maximizer indeed..
Horīzon
Damn, i just exported my file again and listened back, and again theres still clipping :\, I shouldn't be clipping anymore :s
lenieNt Force
Strange... Sure the maximizer is working properly? Can you clearly see that it prevents the signal from exceeding 0dB?

edit: Try just significantly lowering the volume on the master track... so that u can rule out that it isn't a clipping issue
Horīzon
Yeah its no way near reaching 0 DB i've done any export of it like well well below too just to make sure and its still crackling, i must say its crackling less, i think this is what happens when i use session drummer vst over and over again, pfft ill try muting each part to try and find if the problem lies within the layers...

lenieNt Force
yeah do that...

Actually, whats probably happening now is that your clipping the input of your limiter... Just drop every track's volume down by about 3.5 dB and you should be fine... Limiters are a bad solution for clipping, they introduce artifacts into the sound so just TURN IT DOWN.

(of course, thats not to say that you shouldn't use one Eldritch, but its not the best solution for a newbie:D )
