There is something to the avoid/minimize argument, and for that reason, a lot of people don't go with SUVs (the ones who don't need the convenience, anyway), just because it is easier to avoid some accidents in the first place, but there will always be accidents you can't avoid, and, in all likelihood, those are the ones in which you'll need all the help you can get to walk away safely.
Most people don't like the look of station wagons. It's not reasonable to think that everyone should abide by your own assessments of the relative utility & convenience of vehicles.

most SUVs aren't made for off-roading.
Bad driving is irritating, regardless of the driver/car, but there's no sense in wasting energy on it, especially based on the source.

also, this all boils down to a very simple idea.
If you think SUV drivers are safer than others, then buy an SUV. If you think the safety of them is outweighed by advantages of size, convenience, gas mileage, price, & image, then you've made the choice to buy something else, and should be able to recognize that someone else made a different choice (and one that you could also have made).

I'm not angry, but at least I'm not here just to be 'devil's advocate' either, I've owned an AWD turbo Celica all the way up to a South African ex-military Landcruiser.
Both have their place, the former for road holding the latter if you're getting shot at occasionally and go on rough roads.
