Can landlords do this? (pg. 2)

legal or illegal is not the relevant question. you have to ask yourself what will you gain by taking action. Litigation costs a fortune and is extremely time consuming. you will in the meantime have to find an apt anyway somewhere else, and spend days at depositions spending ungodly fees to lawyers. nothing lost except a little pride bro, that sux too, but at least you didnt lose any money.

it sux even more when u lose money and the cost of litigation is prohibitve.

Did you sign anything stating that she was required to hold the apartment for you during the application process? If not then she's in the clear.

Sorry bro but as a renter, I have to say, screening tenants is probably one of the highest priorities for all landlords. It is also lightly based on how you present yourself, I mean you'd like to come into a nice space looking like you are neat and upkept..not saying you went there in slippers, bathrobe, and look like you haven't shaved in 3 months. Fact of the matter is, if you DO want to get into a nice space, you'll have to respect it not because you are young or you are short or tall or smoke cigarettes, etc, but the living arrangements mean a lot to the renter. Some may say money is money, it's not money if you rent to someone who throws parties all the time, damages walls, or even looks remotely dependant on the super. Why bother from the renters POV.

Now I'm not saying you are that type, just that's the power landlords own when looking at candidates to rent apartments. Hence screening who the individual is along with credit/renting history.

Yea it sucks but it'd be well worth your time to look presentable when you go looking at apartments...even if you have a reputable job and above par credit/renting history. Not saying go in a suit, but it wouldn't hurt to schedule apt hunting AFTER work where you are in your work attire and try to be understanding when making appointments by explaining to them the time frame you have to work with due to you job. It's just added reassurance thats all!

i didn't sign any papers and neither did she. But she told us on the phone to get our papers to her Tuesday. There really isn't much evidence that I have against her here, except for the things she told me on the phone - if i was only able to get that recording...

even if it is not legal there's really nothing you can do that's worth your time. sorry to say, just get over it.

Dealing with landlords in NYC is awful and dealing with them during the busiest time of year makes the entire experience only worse. For your next apt I would do all the paperwork that day.

*I hope the same thing doesn't happen to me this week :nervous:

The only way you can hold her to anything is if you already put down a deposit and got a receipt for it. Whenever I go apartment hunting I always go dressed like I am going to work so I wont get judged so easily. The same has happened to me before. In addition it's her apartment so she can just make up whatever reason for not giving it to you and no one would question it. Just remember for the future Money talks...if you really like an apartment bring half a months rent with you and put it down immediately before someone else can swipe the place right from under you. Exchange information and I cannot emphasise enought GET A RECEIPT!!!!

not to mention the market right now is crazy, land lords are practically beating potential renters away. There are buildings in fort green that arent even finished being built and are already booked up for at least a year. It doesn't take much when your young to give the land lord the impression that your going to be any kind of a hassle. I've had people calling me to change light bulbs, no joke.
