Student discount on Ableton Live?

I noticed on their website you can get a student discount when you present your student ID to the site. If I'm a university student but not using it for university purposes (like for a course) is it possible to get this discount? For anyone who has gotten the discount before, how much did you end up paying in the end?

I imagine you can probably still get the discount even if it's not for a course.

Not sure how they would verify that, although they could always just ask the school if your ID number matches the name there, and if you are an active student.

Maybe they don't even bother checking? I haven't tried the student discount, so I don't know how much it would end up being, or what the process is.

i dont think there should be any problems getting the student discount as long as you can present a form of proof that you're a currently attending student, usually school id.

Agreed. Friend ordered a Protools/Mbox setup and got a student discount. Just had to e-mail a picture of his student ID. Who are you looking to go through?

I've considered getting student versions of music software before and the problem with doing that is that you're then not licenced to use it for any even slightly commercial purposes, so it's technically illegal to write a track in it then try and get it signed, or use it to play a live set in a club, even if you're only being paid in drinks vouchers.

Some would argue that - while paying a reduced rate for the software is better than just pirating it outright - there's not a lot of point if it's still technically going to be an illegal copy for the purposes for which you'll be using it.

Others would say that at least you're making some contribution for it rather than pirating it outright... all depends where your morals lie I suppose.

He's saying you should do like everyone else and pirate it.

Ahh yes...

Or pay full price for it ;)

Actually no, I'm just saying think about it. If you're not planning to use it commercially at all (i.e. you just want a copy to learn with), or you consider it "morally right" (you've obviously got some morals or you would have just gone straight and pirated it), then do it.

But if anyone asks (and you go the less legit of the options), we never had this conversation :p

My morals have always told me that if someone is willing to give you a discount on something just for being a student, the rest really doesn't matter. :p

Seriously though, buy the student version - the only person whose conscience you'll have to reconcile is your own, and if you're losing sleep over giving the folks at Ableton Headquarters a few extra dollars, I'd recommend seeing a doctor - you aren't mentally well.

Or buy some m-audio hardware that comes with Lite, and upgrade. I ended up getting Live 5 for like $250. Then another $100 a year later to get 6.
