Sales are growing, labels are growing, the audience (buyers and potential buyers) is growing. Things definately don't look as bad as a couple of years ago. There are even some newer labels starting to pay advances in front of releases again.

His most important tip is to be kind towards the people you work with. Golden rule. Being an ass doesn't get you anywhere :). It has often helped me a lot to just be kind towards others I work with.

Yes, sounds like things are improving. I just didn't realize how bad things had gotten. I guess it can no longer be said that a digital label is not a "real" label, because they're all going to be digital soon.

I'm very laid back, so I hardly ever raise a fuss. Being nice goes a long way, but you definately don't want to let label management take you for granted. Sometimes you have to be assertive, but you can do it in a professional manner. No reason to get angry, that never helps.

Two good licenses for year, and you have more than enough to live, of course, licenses to labels like MOS, or big compilations, or TV, Movies, that kind of licenses gives alot of money, Gigs is not the only way ;).

Sure, we'd all love to get deals like that. They don't come along every day though.

yep, nothing new, but just painting the picture of where the scene is at. I would never expect to make money by music as singles. Media in any way shape or form is one of the only viable ways to make substantial money now.

Well, it's not like one day you just wake up and decide "I want to make a living off EDM". It's something you grow into, you enjoy and eventually you start making some money because you become good at it...nothing more to it than that. I believe that if there's something you truly enjoy in life and take the patience and time to master it you can make a living off it.

I thought this could use a bump as it's a great read. Can't beat advice from a seasoned pro.

Sure is a good thread...

I wonder how it looks for various genres of EDM. For instance, trance, breaks, rap-beats, techno, IDM, ambient, DnB, two-step, etc. I'll bet that the differences are marginal at best, but I am curious.

i dont want to live out of edm anyway, its to many people in this industry and i like my fulltime job very much, it would be great to earn some so i could work a few hours less on the other job only. like only 4 days a week on the other job then fridays, weekends and evenings the rest. i believe i would dry out of ideas pretty fast if i worked with music all day everyday. also the pressure would be too much that u have to make a killer track each time. i think things are going the right way creativity is allowed now since everyone has accepted the fact that this wont make u rich anyway, tho very few do it (creativity). imo

thats the idea and thats the problem people in the music industry told me before
You are forced to do things under pressure they said they wish they can get back to doing what they want at they time they want becasue they had better ideas and they were more creative

u can make money on house still. house-lovers are too "cool" for internet and mp3 and still buy vinyl

and yeah I bet 90% of them don't have the interest of producing they are more into Djing

So true!

"So make music as a passionate hobby, then you'll enjoy it, that's the attitude I take and a cherish every minute in the studio."

- Exactly...I feel lucky enough to have music in my life and have something to call my "passionate hobby". Not everyone has that. Whatever benefits follow are simply an appreciated reward.

"It's a real shame the industry has turned into this state because producers should get rewarded for their fine work, after all DJ's wouldn't be able to do their job without music but this is reality of how the world is today and we have to accept it because its not going to change."

- I did find this to be surprising when I was first introduced to the scene. Why were the people playing the music making more than the people MAKING the music? It just didn't and doesn't make sense. I love when an amazing track comes on in the club and someone says "damn this dj is AWESOME" ...ok ok his mixing is tight and he selected this track to play...but he's not awesome because of the track. Man, the PRODUCER is awesome because of the track. :tongue3

I have no ambition to DJ at the present. My dream is to sit back at club or rave and watch people go stupid (drugs or no drugs) to my very own tracks. I think the self satisfaction would be awesome.

The thing that makes me laugh is that a guy (dj) can get more money for playing your record, than you can for actually making it.

I mean, at the end of the day, all a dj is doing is playing someone elses tunes, and will be getting some money for it, whereas the guy who has made it, in all likelyhood is not going to be getting very financially rewarded.

Just seems a bit back to front to me! lol

I just came up with an idea, what if every dj who play for example for audience above 1000 people, or those big names would make an official tracklist of tracks they play at certain gig , so for example at the end of year, half year ect they would be charged from they fees for each track played at certain gig, some kind of taxes and certain labels would get those money to pay more for producers :toothless
