Depending upon what audio program you use, it's probably safest to go with a dual core. |

as neat as tinyxp is, you open yourself up to a lot of instability. not worth it imo! |

hey guys, I really wanna know, if I can use the 4 cores with live?
I mean, smth like use 1 core for some tracks with some vsts intrusments, 1 for vst effects, other for audio files, other for etc and etc...
is it possible?
also, one guy told me that my money will be better spent on a faster speed dual core, which will run better than a quad core at slower speed, cause if ableton doesnt fully support cores, it'll just run a single 2.4ghz (and the other 3 cores will be kinda useless) while the dualcore 3.0ghz would also run just 1 core, but faster, 3ghz...
any opinions? |

for now, isn't it better to go for the heaviest single cores?
Like the FX60 from AMD? I know in reason at least, when i went from pentium 4 2.8 gighz to my current AMD 4000 san diego. My cpu capacity increased by 4-5 times at least.
Though i tried some VSTs and i know for example that some presets from NI Massive can take my entire cpu to 100%..freaking weird.
Anyway i'll be goign for the FX60 when i get the money. Can't be arsed to get a new pc every year. |

Ok, had some extensive producing sessions with this baby :D
First of all, my system runs pretty stable (Windows XP SP2). As i sayd im running a Core 2 Duo E6850 on an Asrock ConRoe1333-D667 mainboard. 2 Gigs of 800 Mhz Patriot ram and a Leadtek grafic card with a Geforce 8400GS Chip. Paid 600 € for the whole system (HD, Tower... included).
First i was a bit unsure about the mainboard, with a pricing of circa 50 € it is far below low budget. Blessedly there havent been any disappointments till now :p.
To get a good relation of how strong the new cpu is i opened a project i made with Fruityloops 6 on my old Computer (Msi Mainboard, Athlon XP 2800 which is comparable to pentium 4 2400, 1 GB ram). Its about 7 minutes long and contains following plugins.
z3ta x 4
refx Vanguard x 3
Albino 3 x 1
Fruity Parametriq EQ x 11
Fruity Free Filter x 5
Fruity Delay 2 x 5
Steinberg Bitcrusher x 3
mg TriggerGate x 5
Fruity Phaser x 1
dblue Glitch x 4
Fruity Peak Controler x 2.

I remember my Athlon Xp 2800 stuck at 100 % load at this project. The E6850 reaches about 30 % at Peak times, in average it uses about 20 % workload and besides that im still connected to the internet, running thunderbird and pidgin instant messenger.
Obviously my new system is about 5 times stronger when producing with Fruityloops but this might differ abit when working with other programms.
Then i tried to shred the cpu with a pad using as much layers / plugins as possible, which was an absurd idea i noticed later. You can laugh about me here :haha:.
The pad contains 2 x z3ta, 3 x Albino 3, 2 x Native Instruments Massive, 3 x refx Vanguard and a few effect plugs. Cpu usage in average around 10 %.

core 2 duo is the best way to go atm... you wont find anything comparable for the price. and both core`s are used. so actualy your mhz is doubled.
core 2 quad are two core2duo processor`s packed on one plate. i have not heard anything good about this cpu so far, would acualy wait for a real quad core to come out. |

hey mate, that's exactly what im going to get!
just wanted to know, what cooler do u have?
im probably going to get a NOCTUA NH-U12F or a SCYTHE NINJA PLUS REV. B, but I'm not sure yet... any other suggestions?
i want smth not that big, not that hot and not that noisy :P

oh, im not sure about the cooler. mine is pretty loud atm, but im looking for a quite one.
both cooler`s you name there seem to be pretty good so i would probably go for the cheaper one of them.
as soundcard i use creative x-fi fatality. actualy this is a gamer soundcard but the audioquality is pretty good and it supports asio 2, 32 bit and all the stuff i need for producing.
if you`re looking for a rather pure producing solution i would go for e-mu 0404 or a m-audio soundcard. |

Well i just upgraded my pc ..(again..)
I went from AMD San Diego 4000, 2.41 gighz, 1mb L2cashe memory, with 2 gig PC3200 (i think 400mhz) Ram.
To this
E6750, Overclocked to 3 gighz (So the same as E6850) 4 gig Ram 800Mhz, though my windows only recognizes 3 gig. The dude explaind me that it's because am running windows 32 bits not 64. Is that true? any verification on this would be helpfull.
So far to be honnest, i see that there is 15-25% less cpu usage on some ofmy projects. It seems the TOXIC 3 synth is still a heavy synth.
Don't know. Was my old processor that strong?? i doubt it. |

Wow, nice setup you build there, how much did you pay?
Maybe Toxic3 doesnt support multicore cpu`s and just one core is running. guess you`ll notice the improvement when running more programms at once.
As far is i know xp is capable of using 4 gigs. 2 gb for the os itself and maximum of 2gb for external programms. |
