I've been sniffing around for a new car too :(
It's a pain in the bum

What are you looking at?

We don't have sebring here, I don't think.

I googled for pics, but didn't recognise anything :/

yeah, its a chrystler
when they first debuted they were kinda sweet, but now you pretty much just see them at rental agencies
fly into america and try to rent a convertible. 95% chance they'll give you a sebring

I'm mostly 'Orstraaalianised' with accent ;)
On demand I can still do west-country english (but I wont!)

What are you looking at?

Narrowed it down to-

Toyota Aristo (JDM grey import- aka here as a Lexus GS300 or GS400)
2 types-
3L twin turbo RWD straight 6 or the 4L V8 Quad cam AWD
Essentially a Supra in sedan drag, looks good but not over the top, very nicely fitted out and cheap!
Bad points- It's only available in Automatic, I don't like automatic and Honey Rabbit knows how to drive automatics so she might end up behind the wheel and break it. (worst driver ever)

Nissan Skylines R32 and R33 V-Spec GTR's (JDM grey imports)
2.6L Twin turbo, AWD's
Both are good cars and I'm quite familiar with how they work, handle and drive. The R32's are a bit old and thrashed so I'll be looking long and hard to find a good one, the R33's are a bit better mechanically but a little heavier, little better handling in some regards.
Bad points- Use lots of fuel, if they break then it costs a lot.
Cops like to chase them

Mitsubishi GTO 1997 (JDM grey import)
3L V6 Twin turbo, 6speed manual, AWD, AWS... more damn gadgets than is damn sensible.
Its soooooo pretty :(
But when it breaks, no one will know how to fix it short of a couple of specialist shops. But its soooo pretty
Bad points- uses a lot of fuel, probably an unknown as far as handling goes too, not a lot of experience in them.

Mitsubishi EVO VI & VII (JDM grey imports)
2L turbo AWD, manual
They're fun! Probably too much fun and if I break it, then it's going to cost a lot.
Bad points- It looks like any other Lancer with a fart-can muffler on the back, they're also awful for long range trips with hard suspension and high revving with short gear ratios.
Little car, lot of money

Nissan S15 Silvia (JDM grey import and also local as 200SX)
2L RWD turbo manual
Weeeee! These are fun, they look sweet and go like a rocket. I've a lot of experience in RWD turbo's so it's easy and lots of evil things to do to it in terms of aftermarket bits.
Bad points- hard to find a good one, most are owned by mental cases
Cops like to chase them

I've always liked the looks of them. But I don't like V8s. Rego cost and all that. Can you get the six in AWD? If not, fail.

Yeah, good luck finding an R32 that isn't flogged, and badly.

I never really liked the R33 that much, on aesthetics. And like you said, it's heavier, and I think has a longer wheel base, which deducts from the handling a bit.

The R34 GTR though.... *drool* *drool* *drool* *drool* *drool*

Pricey :(

Not that pretty :p

Don't know much about them though, they're really rare in Oz.

LMAO at Fart-Can Muffler. Too true though, a regular Lancer with a body kit looks pretty much the same.

Lotsa fun though, I would imagine.

For some reason, I only like the look of them sans rear spoiler. And I refuse to budge on that.

But yeah, they are nice looking, and go like , especially with aftermarket bits and pieces, and a sworn legal doc from your 'sweetness and light.' :p

I guess it depends what you wanna be sitting in, through Sydney traffic :p

Nope.
However... they're at the kind of price where I could throw in lumpy cams, new manifolds, ECU, dynotuned and a supercharger with the change :D
Lexus 4L V8's are nice engines, better than the pushrod crap that ford and holden use over there.

I'm not dropping 70k on a car again. It's a depreciating asset.

I think they're very pretty.

They really, really hammer. But looking at the engine layout and plumbing under there, it reminds me of my old 300zx, absolute nightmare and if I take it to my uncle to service, he'll hate me... I would :p

Which may be a good thing, no one's going to steal a riced up lancer unless they're like the lowest crack head on earth and even then they'd only do it mistaking it for a commodore.
Figure if I stuck a standard bonnet on it and get the rear towel rack thing they have happening back there on the boot taken off.
No one's going to notice it :D

Yes, spoilers on them just seem to spoil the lines on the car, having been driving one which is older and still has a (worked to the ) 2L turbo, they've got some good points.
'Sweetness & Light' gets no choice in the matter. She was in the last nice car I owned that got written off, it might not be her fault it was turned in a mangled wreck... but she still feels guilty.
(If anything I feel guilty because by writing it off with full comprehensive and not being at fault I made about $42,000 more than I would have selling it... shhh! I am a bad kittens.... )

quote:

I could drive a 300zx in race trim with 300hp at the back wheels and a 1000lb clamp, brass button clutch and not hit anyone. Unless it was wet, then it wasn't much fun at all.
Also given consideration to the Supra's, but they're like the R32's and they lead very hard, abused lives so I'm dumping that idea unless a mint condition one turns up.

If it's that good, why would you have to do all that to it? Because it's cheap? Bah!

And yeah, it's obviously gonna be better than the Ford/Holden situation. Although, the F6 Typhoon sounds like fun....

Again? 'Splain :p

And it's an R34. You can hear that purrrrrrr from the engine right now, can't you?

Purrrrrrrrr......

I have heard that the handling is a little scary, also. Not as fine tuned as the other AWDs. And since you seem to be adept at almost killing yourself .... :p

Yes, they would steal it.

By dumbing the looks down, you're just giving them a tip :p

Would that be like your last 300ZX? :p Sounds safe :p

The driveline gets ripped to bits on a fairly regular basis, it's a lemon. A much hyped and almost success, but a lemon.

It's value is going to drop through the floor come 2008 when the new GTR rolls off the lines, I could wait until then and maybe see them drop down to the point it makes them 'affordable'

Gez, write off one race car and every ones on your ass...
I'd have to try it for myself, apparently the later models are a bit better in terms of not being over-involved with mechanical compensation, so we'll see after a test drive.

A late model holden caprice 5.7L V8 with all the nice bits + Brembo brake package and a LOT of engine work, "Poppy the Road Whale" was a serious bit of car. Sadly not enough car to survive being hit in the bum by a 4wd doing 60km/h and then pushed in front of a Mercedes doing 60km/h.
It was insured for new-replacement value. So instead of selling it for about 35-40, I got back the whole 78k and stuck it in the bank on top of my long term deposit account, where by now it's probably increased by about 7k over the last 10 or so months.
Miss Sunshine did me a bit of a favour... :o

quote:

It was, mostly, until it got wet, then it just had zero traction on big semi-slicks and turned into a road-boat.
