I have already spent a fall semester in the Netherlands and the UK (well, just London) and had absolutely no problem watching every single Green Bay Packers game - many of which various pubs stayed open to broadcast into the wee hours of the morning. They were always packed.
|
Were these American-themed pubs or did you ask to watch the games? I've just looked in the paper and the only NFL match on TV this week started in the middle of Monday night. I can't imagine the general public staying up until midnight on a work night to watch American Football. |

| Actually, now that I think about it, the Bears might win by virtue of the "Superfans" SNL skit. Close call. |

Do you have a satellite dish?
:conf:
And no, I only went to one "American Themed Sports Bar" while I was in London, the rest were all very random.
And noon games started at 6, 3 games at 10, and so on. The only really late games were either Sunday night or Monday night. |

Yes. I work in a pub as well, and I've never known anyone watch NFL. |

in order to settle this debate and to better educate the masses, i suggest a bizzaro-flip-day for DJ Tiesto and the Chicago Bears. Tiesto can come to Chicago and put on a football uniform and attempt to score a touchdown, and the Chicago Bears can all get into a DJ booth and collectively try their best at trance and jesus poses.
then the question would no longer be "who is more well known" but "who will fail harder?" |

Well then your experience differs vastly from mine, it certainly doesn't make any of the points made in this thread any less valid simply because you've never known anyone to watch the NFL, nor does my ability to easily catch all of my home teams football games while abroad definitively support my position. You cannot, however, deny the fact that almost every single game that is played each week in the NFL is indeed available in almost any country where satellite service is available, so simply because you haven't found it doesn't mean it isn't there.
And honestly - if anyone can come up with some way to put forth a reasonable idea as to why Tiesto would be better known, I'll be all ears - but if all I have to go on is TV ratings and the shear fact that I know there are more people in the world who know what the NFL is than what trance music is, I'll trust my gut and not yours. |

| I'm not debating that more people probably know about the Chicago Bears than Tiesto, but I think it's very likely that most of those people are American, because American football is hardly played at all outside of North America. I agree that anecdotal evidence isn't proof of anything, but out of the 100million people who watch the NFL every week, I'd be very interested to see the non-American percentage of that figure. I doubt that outside of America there are as many people who know the Chicago Bears as Tiesto. |
