Among "unskilled workers," women, with few exceptions, don't take physically risky jobs, which pay more. That's one of the reasons for the "overall wage gap."
There is still a pay gap, though not as large, between men and women of equal work experience and job titles, though. If I had to take a crack at the reason for that, I'd point to the belief among employers that many women will eventually have kids and will want to take time off, have reduced hours, or even retire from their jobs. Other things being equal, this makes them less "valuable" in the workplace from a long-term, strict profit standpoint. I would wager that this by itself is almost sufficient to explain the remaining gap.
I also suspect that pregnancy, childcare, etc. are why more government money gets spent on female healthcare. |

prenatal care is included in this figure and is why there is a huge gap. I am gonna go out on a limb here and say if you control for health services the other gender doesn't use...these figures would be equal.
also its interesting that I think it is 70% or 60% of all executives in the world are above 6 foot, while only 16% of the population is over 6 foot....im glad im 6'3 |
