Do I support the selling of AK-47s? No. Do I support the selling of rifles for hunting purposes and small-arms for home self-defense in case someone breaks in with intent to cause harm? Yes. Unfortunately, there's absolutely zero way to control the personality of each individual that purchases such a weapon. Background checks only do so much.

There's no winning scenario here.

If only we could make everybody sane and peaceful.

Unfortunately, that's a lot tougher than either buying everybody a gun or taking everybody's guns away. :p

No, see, that's the problem. If there were NO guns available anywhere, you wouldn't need a gun to defend yourself at home, because anyone breaking and entering probably wouldn't have one either.

"NO guns" at all? Anywhere? Including the military and police forces? What, are we going to go back to throwing rocks?

I'm not inclined to trust "authority figures" any more than I'd trust the average civilian gun owner.

I'd trust an average civilian more than an authority figure simply because the authority figure has a better chance of getting away with discharging her/his weapon. That said, while I'm not saying that guns are a good thing, abolishing them outright is absurd.

Don't act so thick. You know exactly what he meant.

Average people :)
Just makes me think of George Carlin saying-
"Just think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize half of them are even stupider!"

And he is right, most people out there you wouldn't trust with a sharp pencil at the end of the day, it's why there's disclaimers on just about everything you buy in the US to avoid litigation from idiots. If there was some kind of mandatory training in firearm use, like the other big killer, motor vehicles, then you might cut down at least on the idiots that aren't able to cause harm to themselves (or inadvertently to anyone else) with firearms. Because those statistics from memory are slightly worrying as well.
As for lunatics who go out to commit homicide and crime, I don't think there's much you can ever do about that because they'll get what they need to do the job either way.
As for the coppers, put yourself in their shoes. If the government is fairly much selling weapons and weapons of warfare like an AK47 or weapons simply designed to kill other people like pistols, then you can't really blame them for being a bit 'twitchy' knowing every car you pull over might have a machinegun in it or every toerag you pull up on the street could have a pistol under their jacket.

:stongue:

Yeah, the government would magically get rid of the 300,000,000+ guns in the country.

It worked in our country.

I wasn't proposing that you DO get rid of guns anyway; I know that will never happen. I was just explaining how much better the situation would be without them.
