KRK RP5's

hey guys
i'm thinking about getting some monitors to replace my crappy amp and mission floorstanders (which have ripped woofers :( ) with a pair of these:

what are peoples opinions on them? are they decent despite their small size? budget is about £250 for the pair really
also i would want to use my sub with them, so could i just plug my sub's 2 RCA inputs into the master 2 out on my mixer (djm500), while the monitors were on the master 1 (XLR out)?

I used the RP5's for a few years. They are solid monitors. I eventually upgraded to the KRK V8's mainly because the larger woofers pick up the lows better. But if you're using them with a sub, that's a top-notch setup.
Also, you output configuration should work fine. My only comment would be that you might want to put the RP5's on the master out and the sub on the booth monitor out. That way, you can control the volume of each independently. |

good advice thanks :) i will have to run them both on the master out cos i use the booth for recording, but adjusting the sub volume is easy enough :)
i will pick them up tomorrow (found a pair for £239), just out of curiosity - is there a noticeable difference in sound quality between using XLR and standard phono?

i have the rp5s...with the rp10 which i recently picked up...decent bass on the rp5s...nothing mind blowing. i think the highs are a bit fatiguing after a while however. regarding the sub...i personally would save up for the rp10 or any other powered sub with in's and out's...connect your speakers into the sub...then into the mixer...i love the rp10 because of its built-in crossover. you don't really need your sub to be playing mid range frequencies...i find it when that happens to be a bit muddy but then again it is my opinion.
for the price...the rp5s are a great deal...but its nowhere near great. good dj monitors though...the clarity compared to some decent home stereo speakers is like night and day...only reason i caved in and bought the rp5s |

Each to their own but I really don;t think separate subs are the way to go for monitoring systems. It's so rare that they can be set up properly to fit the room and be able to get a true full frequency range response from 2.1 monitoring systems.
Also connectors themsleves don't make for better quality shound. Asuming the XLR's are balanced they will have a much higher degree of protection from interference (RFI, EMI etc) especially over longer cable runs.
Go for monitors that have a larger driver if bass response/clarity is a big concern.
I hear good things about the Rp10's and V8's. I really would avoid a separate sub if you want ot do producing too. |

did you mean the rp8? isn't the rp10 the separate sub? |

Yeah I guess he means RP8s. The problem with that is that in many cases the room you are using won't be big enough to handle the 8 inch monitors.
The truth is setting up monitors properly is always a bit tricky no matter what size. Most of the time you have to accept that the room you are using doesn't have great acoustics and you have to live with that. |

For home DJ purposes, not really. If you turn the speakers up to full volume, you might get a slight humm/hiss if you don't use XLR, but no big deal. |

True to an extent but that really depends on the room and treatment in it. I'd much prefer to try and make a pair larger monitors fit in a room than get a separate sub to sit properly - any day.

i'm slowly buying more equip.. my next thing on my wish list is monitors. i have been looking at the rp8's because of their size and quality for my room. but now that i read this i have a question. are you saying for just a bedroom that rp8's might be too much? because whatever i buy is going to be just for my bedroom... i don't really plan on taking it out anywhere. should i go for maybe the rp5 or rp6 instead? |

for those setting up a seperate sub, here's a pro tip to help you find the best location for it
set you sub up where your head is going to be (on top of a box on your chair should work fine, make sure it's solid to mimick sitting on a floor surface)
then move around the room and find the spot where the bass the is strongest (usually it's near a corner, allowing the 2 walls and floor to act as sort of a natural amp)
there you found your sweet spot |

i think i will go for them still, my current speakers (mission 773e floorstanders) are good but the woofers are ripped and my amp is crap
im not too concerned about amazing sound so am not bothered about a new sub, i just want small powerful speakers i can put on my desk in front of me so i can still clearly hear my mixing at fairly low volumes :) |
