Considering how employers have to sift through thousands of resumes, the objective is to make your resume stick out, a high GPA is probably the easiest way to get someone's attention...no matter what school you go to, and if you have a high GPA, why not put it on the resume??

I would imagine that your career objective is for the job you are currently applying to...

seems pretty self explanatory, when you list career goals, even if it is within the field of the job, if it is too lofty..it detracts away from the position you are applying for...the main goal is to get the position first not look ahead of the position.

Just speaking from experience as to what a recruiter looks for and doesn't seeing as how I am a Human Resources Recruiter.

also list overall GPA if over a 3.0 or at least major GPA if your overall GPA is not over a 3.0, and any academic achievements

Oh yeah, and i wouldn't put my gpa on my resume unless it was significantly higher than a 3.0. A 3.0 gpa isn't that great, especially considering many undergrad classes don't grade on curves. when you near 3.6 then you should put it on there. If you have your class rank, that may be better if you're in the top 15 percent (or something similar).

From the perspective of an employer, putting a 3.1 gpa on your resume looks like if you went to montclair and another student from nyu has even a 3.4. i don't see an advantage unless your gpa is very high.

I am not sure about TV/Broadcasting, but I guess it depends on the field you are applying for how much GPA matters.

I just know that since I am working in asset management, GPA is a really big factor in determining potential candidates. Even if it is a lesser university like montclair, if the person has a relatively high GPA, that meets our standards, then we will give him the benefit of the doubt that he worked hard regardless and at least grant him an interview. Truthfully, no matter what school you go to, it is only worth what you make out of it. Obviously name is a big factor but we would rather take a high achiever at a lesser university than a slacker from a top business school.

i agree, it's just that 3.0 is way too low; you're better off not putting it on the resume if it's that low.

having a high GPA doesn't mean a high achiever...depends on department really because having a 3.8 in general studies opposed to a 3.3 in mechanical engineering is very different.

yes ive definitely seen GPA and/or secondary institution being a HUGE factor with most financial-related positions, esp when it comes to handling ppl's assets/finances etc.

in other industries, it may be used to gauge your potential (whether fair or not, it does show discipline to some degree) Recruiters will use your GPA as they will. Don't include it unless they ask

I've applied and interviewed for a few to a few Media/Broadcasting companies before and while GPA did not really play as large of a role, they do ask how you are with numbers and/or with Math (esp if you are working in Media/Media Research which would involve working with numbers and being analytical). every situation is different. i guess if you can portray yourself as a person who is proactive and a quick learner on ur resume (by illustrating past work experience that can support that), that should lean the odds in your favor. the rest is up to you to shine at the interview.

GPA IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS YOU GUYS ARE MAKING IT OUT TO BE!!!!

They are looking for creative outlets, internships, previous jobs, CLASSES you took in broadcasting, etc. UNLESS the job description calls for a GPA DO NOT INCLUDE IT, it can hurt you regardless of what it is. GPA seriously is the least of your worries on a resume. Like Jerz said proof read, check for spelling, etc, most recruiters could care less about a GPA unless it is a specific job requirement and then they will enter that into the Job posting.

What you want your resume to do is stick out, grab the recruiter’s attention. So put yourself in there shoes....they will get 100 + resumes for one position. They then need to look through every single one to pick out a handfull they want to go after. Most companies are now using computer databases and when looking for resumes will put in keywords for a search in the database. Whoever matches that search gets looked at and possibly interviewed. KEYWORDS are what are needed on resumes now.

If you are still quite worried about your resume you can hire someone to write it for you. Also try and get in touch with Headhunters they will help you tweak your resume as well as do all the dirty work of getting you interviews.

correct, unless your gpa is spectacularly high or you are applying for a "pedigree" type of job, ie., law, finance, management consulting, etc...

and i can't see how a 3.9 gpa can hurt someone.

I really didn't know that someone could get so animated about resume tips...I am just trying to help the guy but since you are the expert of resume tips, there is no point for me to make any more suggestions.
