Which Ortofons are the best? (pg. 2)

| I will exlain this in more detail later, I have to go now, but in general elliptical styli are better than spherical ones. |

OK, here's the deal.
Spherical are totally round. They sit in the groove, with only one point of contact on the record. Elliptical styli are more stretched, this means that the area they touch on the groove is greater, meaning that there is less pressure (Pressure = Force x Area). This means that the life of both the record and the needle are increased.
Rudimentary diagram:

In addition to this, because elliptical styli are more stretched, it allows the stylus to reach further down into the groove. This means that the stylus will pick up a higher frequency range than a spherical one, giving a richer and fuller sound.
However, these advantages come at a price. Elliptical styli are move expensive because they are harder to make. In addition to this, because the stylus can reach further down into the groove, the needle picks up more record surface noise. This however is not usually noticeable enough to be a problem. |

Hmm for once I have to disagree partially witho uyou DJTJ :)
Elliptical styli will wear out the record FASTER than spherical. Yeah it's true you need less pressure with ellipticals, but the contact area is bigger. You know the most important part of the information is on the side of the grooves. And the stylus will scrape off vinyl every time it passes through the groove. Bigger contact area = more vinyl loss on the side of the grooves.
Of course the difference is not huge. It's not like the record will be bad after 10 spins... But that's why most of the time spherical needles are recommended when spinning in rough conditions (clubs and gigs, mucho vibrations, requires more pressure to counteract).
So at equal pressure, elliptical will wear out faster...
(Coolest part is I had to learn this in school :D) |

i dunno about that.
physics wise it makes more sense.. more area less pressure. less pressure, less wear. or even if there is the same ammount of wear, it will be spread out farther.
when i have a some time i'll play around with a few formulas and figure it out but for now i gotta go get some food!!

| Yeah yeah I know, theoretically it makes more sense, but since I dj I've found out you can't always trust theory :D |

I've got new Tech 1200MK2's and a mixer on order, and now I'm down to cartridge & stylii choices. I need to decide soon so I can have them to test out the TT's when they come in. (BTW, all this is for "bedroom" use. :D )
So... if I want to keep my vinyl in good shape (despite the obvious: don't spin it  ), which stylii should I get, spherical or elliptical? This seems to be in debate here..
As for the carts, I'm leaning toward the Concorde DJ (blue), but I wouldn't mind having the Concorde Nightclub's if they're worth the extra $$.
Any advice? Also, who has the best online price for Ortofon?
thx! |

| I would settle for the Dj's. The difference between Dj's and Nightclubs is really minimal. |

Sorry, that's me having a funny 5 minutes. (Pressure = Force / Area), not (Pressure = Force x Area). Doesn't change what I said though. More area means less pressure. |

That seems to be the response I'm getting all around. Thanks for your suggestion. BTW, my Tech's came in today (oh yeah!) so I've got to go grab some carts ASAP!
DJTJ, many thanks for your spherical vs. eliptical explaination. That cleared up a lot for me.
As for the pressure & wear thing, doesn't it make sense that the spherical stylus would wear the upper part of the groove faster, while the elliptical stylus would wear the deeper part of the groove faster? |

well in all honesty.. i wouldn't worry about wearing down your records. just don't keep the weight very high. the nice thing bout ortofons is you get great tracking and sound at 2-2.5 gram. i use 2.5 myself..
unless u play a record ALL the time, i wouldn't worry. me personally, i get a record and play it like mad for a while, then it becomes part of the collection and just gets a play every now and then. so i guess my records are ok =)
yah go to a store and grab some carts
screw waiting for them to arrive via mail!!

Basically yes, but if you look good to the picture provided by DJTJ, you'll see the elliptical stylus doesn't only touch the deeper part, but also a bigger area. That's why they have a better frequency range. But in the long term there will be more wear (again not enough to say there's a HUGE difference). |
