| Nah, when you don't put massive pressure on it the wear is not that big you know. It's not like you would play the record 10 times cut right through it :D |

Basically yes, but if you look good to the picture provided by DJTJ, you'll see the elliptical stylus doesn't only touch the deeper part, but also a bigger area. That's why they have a better frequency range. But in the long term there will be more wear (again not enough to say there's a HUGE difference). |
Don't take too much notice of that picture! It's not like it's to scale or anything, I just knocked it up in 20 seconds in Paintshop Pro. It's just a rough picture of how it works. |

Yeah maybe it's pretty rough, but it gives the right idea none the less. The elliptical stylus touches more area... |

These are a couple of excellent links, well worth checking out if you're looking to buy cartridges/styli. |

Sorry, this is absolutely wrong. I want to settle this once and for all.
You have a misconception of common physics. DJTJ had it right:
F = P/A
As you can see, Force and Area are INVERSELY proportional. The GREATER the area is, the LESS the force.
If you think about it, it will make perfect sense. Let's say you have two styli, one elliptical, one spherical. You set them both on 3g. The spherical ones, therefore, are pushing down 3 grams on LESS surface area. That means that there is more force on that smaller area, whereas the elliptical ones have the force spread out over a greater area.
This is a simple principle. Fluid power dynamics is based on it, hydraulics and pneumatics.
Just think about it, what would have more force per surface area, stabbing a knife at someone, or punching someone? Obviously the knife - all that force is concentrated on such a small space - so much so that it actually penetrates the skin!
Or, another example (I remember it from my fluid textbook): "what would hurt more, a woman who would step on your foot with shoes, or a woman with high heels?"
Obviously the high heels - these would hurt like a bitch. That's because the woman's weight (which is force) is concentrated on such a small surface area. Whereas getting stepped on by a shoe is no biggie (relatively speaking lol).
I know this thread is old, but I had to clear up this misinformation. |

| well actually f=p/a, force is constant, pressure is what varies, you cant make something have more weight [which is the force due to gravity...] wear has more to do with friction which is what causes the needles to heat up. Friction is coefficient of friction times the normal force, or the force the that the record is putting on the needle to keep it still vertically. since you have the same weight on both, the normal force will be the same and the coefficient of fricoitn witll be the same so the force of friction will be the same. thus both will do as much total damage on the record. they will just wear out the record differently. i guess that makes it not a very good idea to go from one type of stylus to another with a record worn by only one type or stylus. well i dont know if that makes sense but it does to me... im not saying that anyones wrong becusae im not 100% sure. |

Damn...good point! It's been a while since I've done this...
What I said still applies, just replace "force" with "pressure". That makes more sense now. If F is constant, then increasing area will decrease pressure.
If the physics does little to help, then just read my analogies which will make it all clear.
Friction is a different story. It accounts for record wear in a different way (heat). |

funny you guys remembered this post!
but intuitively, if the elyptical needles have more surface area, they are less harsh on your records. even taking the statement above that equal damage will be done to the records, the damage will be more spread out.
so my conclusion:
buy old spherical styli off of ebay (1+ years)
duck tape (not glue) silver dollars to the carts.
and vwalla, you have no wearing!! |
