TAPS Idol - Week 2 - Clone It!
View this Thread in Original format

Okay contestants!

The week 2 challenge is up - 'clone it' - pick one of your favorite trance/psy/whatever tracks and do your best to recreate it. your mp3 of your work must be side by side with the original (a clip of between 15 and 30 seconds) so we can compare and see who truly understands the eq, compression, synth programming of their favorite artists. midi's available at nonstop2k. 1 - 3 minutes in length.

To overcome the timing issues that plagued week one (heh heh), here's a link to a world clock so we all have the same reference. The city we'll go with is Los Angeles. When it hits the end of Monday October 1 (that is, midnight) in LA this week's links to entries must have been emailed to me.

With only four contestants making it though to round two, we're all going to make it through to week 4 even if we make two minute recordings of ourselves burping and call it a cover of Gamemaster. Not that any of us are going to do that!

There will be voting for the next two challenges, and points allocated (all are welcome to participate in the voting/ feedback). The contestant with the most points from the next two challenges will gain immunity for round 4, that is, will be guaranteed a spot in round 5.

We had some great music in round one, let's have fun with this challenge and come up with some great sounding clones!!!
System101
Voting works like this:

Everyone votes for their top 3 fav. of the 4.

#1 Fav = 3 points
#2 Fav = 2 points
#3 Fav = 1 point

Yay, we're down to three contestants already!!!

Man I love this competition...here's the download link for this week's entries...

Week Two Entries

We all had different methods for putting the original track in there...I put mine in a separate mp3, system101 has the clip at the start of his mp3 and D4Dirty...didn't put in a clip, so I have no idea how close he got. It sounds fantastic, but please, post a link to a short clip of the original in this thread somewhere!

Heck, we'll still go with the voting, what the hey...let's open the votes for a week (so that's 11.59pm LA time next Monday). Anyone can place the three (grr) contestants in order. Let's have the votes and discussion directly in this thread rather than emailing me!

Hope you enjoy the entries anyway!

(
oh - by the way - the songs are:
system101 - Solar Stone's "Seven Cities"
D4Dirty - Hook n Sling's "The Bump"
Fabrik Europa (derail) - Activa's "Flashpoint"
)

My entry has the original first, then my version directly after :-)

You're right...it does....heh heh...the lack of a gap threw me! Plus the fact that it's a damn good recreation effort! Kudos!

Heck, I'm going to cast my vote now - D4Dirty, you get the 3 points, it sounds like a tough track to copy and your version sounds fantastic. system101, that means you get the 2 points from me. Your choral pad seems to have much more male bass voices than the original. And the plucked lead sound of the original seems to have turned into a piano... (on a side note, one of the lead sounds I used in my clone was the vengeance preset "Solar Stone" in my Virus KC... though I ripped heaps of the lows out and gave it a high boost, so it sounds quite different....)

And I guess I give myself a point since everyone has 3 votes! Yay!

yeah chris, great job... love the hook n' sling fx :)
d4dirty
Cheers guys, could have been better but we are all limited by time! I will listen to everyone's tonight and make my votes.

Heres my vote:

1)derail: Excellent job mate. I had to listen to this a few times to sport the difference. This is pretty hard track to replicate and honestly yours to me sounds better. If we were going on exact copies then I think the bass on yours is just a slight bit too prominent... but if we are going on style and technique then you mix sounds better to me. I'm going to put you ahead of me on this one because yours to me sounds much closer to the original then mine.

2)d4dirty: Did my best with the time I had. Could have been better but most parts are generally pretty close to a very dynamic track, with the exception of samples which I only had similar timbre type sounds.

3)System101: Good job! Sounds very much like the original. Layers are good delay is good but over it seems to be missing a little of the brightness of the original, I think there is also a slightly brighter pad missing. Overall great job. I think the sample was very simple which is the only reason I put you last.

Great week guys, great entries!

Thanks for the feedback (and the three points) Chris!

It's always tough, trying to clone a track...normally I have the freedom to get some quality sounds together, then take it off in my own direction. I consciously had to pull myself back a number of times on this one.

I've got my work cut out taking you on in the week 3 challenge! Boy, do I have some serious learning to do...I'll try my best to have my track not sound stupid next to yours!!!
System101
Heres my votes:

1) D4Dirty
2) Derail
3) System101

You two did amazing! I'd put you both tied for first if i could... I think i really need to step it up for next week's challenge to have any sort of chance in this competition!

d4dirty
I might have shot myself in the foot here by pulling out my bass out too early.. what the hell am I gonna throw at you guys for Bass Week?
Branah
great job again people! A tough competition again :)

ok here's my vote

1)Derail - in some wierd way I think you had a tiny bit tougher task than D4 and 101 and since I couldn't separate you all by any other criteria, you get the 3 points :D

2)D4Dirty - As always class. Great job. I'd give u 3 points too but there you go :D

3)System 101 - Very very good job, the low points are only cause of the sample-choice (a little less going on than in the other two samples)...

cheers
