Hm, I think your previous installments were more succesful with me when it comes to tune selection. I miss some standout tracks here, even though the overall standard is generally quite high, and I like most of the tunes still. I had almost forgotten how good Ill Bill and Sabac can sound outside of working with Necro. Also, the flow of the set goes a bit wonky after Jamie Lidell. That Gus Gus tune doesn't really fit in between two uptempo rock/guitar tunes from Mars Volta and Refused IMO.

Analyses aside, there's a lot of good music here that people should get to know. Keep it up, uncle dub.

Parts I loved, other parts I didn't. I think your first two efforts are far superior, which isn't to say that this one is bad. It just feels a little bit all over the place, with no theme or anything to tie it all together. The other sets had a diverse array of stylistic elements too, but I thought the movie quotes, etc. did a good job of tying everything together. I dunno, something was just missing on this one, but a collection of ace tunes nonetheless.

it wasn't meant to have a general theme, it's just a collection of good tunes, and i told this to Sand Leaper over msn but i know people was expecting another chill mix, and also smoothness. Which the first one i thought i mentioned that it wasn't a chill mix, just more "phases" of good tunes.

Ye, i made it intentional to not follow a typical direction, it may make the flow wonky, but so was the first as well. The quotes, ye, Nah, i took them down because the second mix was all about the quotes and i really didn't want to make something exactly like the last one or the first one. I thought about adding a quote or two in the instrumental tracks that i had but i felt it was too forced, so i cut them.

i think this rambling can be summarized with just this sentance, I really didn't want to do something exactly like the other ones.

Well, for what it's worth, I think it's a great mix anyhow, and one I won't be deleting any time soon.

But I'll likely never delete your first two. :D
Echo of Silence
ha, I actually think I might like this one best of the three. I really enjoy it. It's fun!

Okay, Next time I'm working at home, I'm going to listen to all 3 of the sets and I'll come back and post which one I like best.
Allied Nations
I think a better title for this mix would be Lost Phases Radio: A Dub Experience.

I got a very late night super dubified local radio show vibe from this set... very cool vibes and very good for just hanging out and studying to.

thanks :)

Ok Tony.

Im going to offer this review with the disclaimer that people like you are music gods looking down on the mere mortals wandering through the record stacks and digital catalogues. Thus, feel free to disregard any and all of my compliments and criticisms.

What i liked about this set:
As usual, track selection, track selection, track selection. High quality tracks infused throughout with little unecessary filler. Diversity is also achieved, though a simple look at your tracklist could confirm that :p. As before, I tried to rate your mixing between unconventional tracks since we all know you can beat match with the best of them. High points in the mixing included the run between Stay Awake and Bloc Party (genius inclusion of and mix into Baseball Cap which I hadn't heard in years) and Gus Gus to Mars Volta (Everyone here seems to think its too transitional, but Is Jesus.. was just starting to really piss me off when MV kicked in). Anytime you can get Black Stacey and Tea for One in the same set, i think you can call it a good day.

What I didn't like about this set:
Jan has said it best when he noted that while track selection is high quality, there really isnt an attention grabber anywhere in the set. With that said, Id like to talk about the mixing a bit. Knowing you were trying to do something different with this set, it sort of surprised me how often you simply slid the fader over, so to speak. One song ends, one song begins with little to no mixing. This is a tactic already well used in your previous phases sets but, as lebez noted, without something like movie quotes to help with the transition, it sticks out a lot more, breaking whatever flow you've created. Too often I'd get into a little flow only to be totally jarred of it, and while I understand the concept you were trying to create with musical "phases", I think you need better transitions between each side. Again surprising that youd use the same tried technique so often when trying to do something new.

Overall, a good mix. As others have said, not as good as one or two, but good enough to stand with its head above the DJ promotion water. This is not to say the first two were immaculate but even in their streakiness there was more cohesiveness and more of the concept of a mix, whereas this seems little more than a track arrangment. A good track arrangement, but only an arrangement in the end.

Again, I know Im just a peon, but these are my initial reactions. I listened to this set twice and it sound great on headphones, sounded weak and boring on my monitors (Alesis MKII).

(Ignore the PM I sent you.)

ok, then, first of all, thanks for the notice of the trackselection and how high i placed it when making something like this, you are right. This is just a glorified arrangement, but then again when it comes to music like this (especially guitardriven type of music), you are nothing more than the arranger. and i hit the crossfader over on many occasions, i have heard several jocks in rock clubs that can do that a bit better than me but they have a bit more precision when they do it (then again, i have heard some rock djs that mix like a deaf monkey).

next point then. the theme (or should i say lack of theme), ah yes, you are the third one (well in this thread, in reality, it's the umphteenth person) to point that out. and i have already defended that with it doesn't have a theme, and I am going to be far up my own arse and say that it's supposed to be like that, this ties with being a 'glorified arrangement'. ye.

i feel i'm repeating myself but the 'not doing the same thing' that we was talking about earlier was more about the trackselection. With the mixing, you can't do anything else with track the routes i wanted to use without doing the uberfilterplay that i shamefully overused (like that big cloud of reverb & flange that i use to tie miles davis to cLOUDDEAD).

but ye, jan caught wind of the wonky flow after jamie lidell, which is a blatant sign after i took a break from the mix since every direction i was trying to do after refused track was just not happening at all. one of the directions i was trying to do was to bring in some natacha atlas or some arabic music into the arrangment since it's very prominent if my daily playlists, the only natacha tracks that would fit was tracks that i didn't like that much and didn't reflect the traditional arabic music that i listen to. and even i managed to work it in it become an even harder styleclash and make the flows even wonkier so i let it rest. Didn't work on it until two weeks after when it the rest of the directions came into my head and then end result was this.

also, the headphones vs. monitors thing, that i can say that i made it on headphones for headphones. so ye.

This mix sucks!

:p

I really liked this...despite the wobbly flow, it was a great collection of interesting music.

Just a couple rebuttals since a reread of my initial response made me look a little disjointed.

As far as your comment that you are simply the arranger...i feel like this is a cop out. You could apply that argument to any crappy mix to excuse bad work. Im not saying what you've done here is bad, but I have heard you mix some unconventional tracks together and I guess I expected a little more quality from a few of the mixes. I guess what Im saying is, Ive heard you do more than throw a cloud of reverb over a mix.

Ok Themes. Stop backtracking :p Either you wanted to create a feel with "phases" of music or not. Even if those phases are radically different (like Refused to Gus Gus) you still have to have some sort of cohesion within. Youve done that well in the past and even within this mix. There are just a few spots where I (and apparently others) know you couldve done better.

I know you wanted to do something new and in that battle, I think youve partially succeeded. Again tons of good tracks and good work as usual, but I cant wait to see what else youve got in store for us.
I also know you wanted to put out a set that reflected your everyday playlist. In that you have had considerably more success, even without the Natacha.

Dunno why I threw the headphones/speakers comment out there but for an extra bit of info. Thanks for the mix which will sit in my playlist for awhile.

Check out the 'summer version', almost identical to the original, yet I like it more. Doves though, one of the most underrated bands going round.
