Nocturnal review thread...and such
View this Thread in Original format

Ok, I have to say I had a great time at Nocturnal, just not sure it was $60/ticket fun. A major sticking point was the fact that I completely zoned on the fact that it was an 18+ party, so I wasn't mentally prepared for what that entails (drinking beer ONLY in beer gardens and such), but that was my fault.

I do have to say my favorite DJ of the night was Mark Knight. I had only briefly heard of him, but never heard a set from him, and I must say I'll have to look for him in the future.

My favorite actual moment from nocturnal might seem odd, but it made me giggle a lot, and even now when I think about it. It was towards the middle of Sharam's set I guess (really not sure, sense of time at that point was very skewed), he was playing some really dark driving beat that I was loving, and they had a video loop of Alice that made her look like she was banging away at a drum that was near perfectly on the beat. Then they put a ring of flames around her head. Anyone else find that as near as entertaining as I did? Anyone know what that track was?

!

that sounds awesome, i was to the right of the DJ booth most of Sharam's set so i couldn't see the screens :(

Once i started hearing the bass line for PATT, i was the first one to run on stage and give him a pat on the shoulder and came back down. The stage was too freaking crowded :whip:

yeah pvd didn't get enough time by far.....less than 2 hours is not enough for pvd to bring it. but he still had one of the best sets at the party. he started off with some massive buildups, and banged it out the rest of the way. but the performers took most of the show away from him imo, and while it was interesting to see a live show, i woulda liked to see more pvd and less vocalists etc. overall, great set from pvd, not the best i've seen but still great, and if he's gonna do a live show again he better get at least 4 hours! i mean you could tell the ending was really rushed, he was just starting to play some amazing tracks when he had to end it because his time was up. now that was weak.

chemical brothers were pretty much insane also, awesome visuals in their show too. the rest of the dj's were pretty much ok, but nothing too interesting imo. i saw part of mark knight, and some others who were playing in the other house room. i was pretty much all over the place most of the night.

pvd played most of the stuff he usually plays, along with his classics and some brand spankin new stuff i haven't heard before. his opening had some really massive buildups which drew you into his set very well. i just wish he would stop playing "the anthem", he's been playing that at every one of his shows for the past year and a half, its so old its boring...ugh. i just wish he had gotten more time, the ending felt to anticlimatic, just when he was starting to really bring it up in the last 15 mins, the party was over and it felt like his set was completely cut off. i think he could've gone at least 2 more hours and his set would've been twice as good. everyone was like awwwwwww when it ended....what a bummer.

I went with a friend to see the Chem Bros, good show, awesome visuals, lost hearing slightly in my left ear, wish they would've played Come With Us and It Began In Africa, but oh well.
As far as 60 for a ticket, it would've been worth it if it was for the event. Way too many kiddies rollin, or maybe I'm getting old.
And there were some dudes at the front of the stage before Chemical came on that were singing along to the intermission reggae music...SUPER ANNOYING. If you are reading this and know who you are, please shut the up and never do that again.
6/10 for the event, 9/10 for the Chem Bros performance. Was cool to hear Rejected - SL3 live though(forgot who dropped it)...banging track!

can we get a tracklist going on here please =]

pvd/carl cox/CL/Sharam/ChemBros./etc. :)

Chem bros opened with galvanize. Then they did a couple others that were pretty good, then there was a huge visual of this ubercreepy clown head and we got the wanderlust and found mark knight and missed the rest of chem bros.

I think this was my first massive in a long time (too tired to go look the last one I went to, but at least 3 years); we had a good time, but it was because we made it a good time.

Based on Rukes' pictures last night, I was excited to see the computerized light bulb thingys.

I got to my hotel at 3, checked in, and napped. I got up at 7 thinking I could go to the will call line, walk right in and get the tickets for my group...hell no. They didn't start letting people in until 7:30.

I went back to the room to change and get ready, and some of my group came up and we chilled and had some cookies; yum.

We all head out, and now there is no line; I walk right up and get the tickets...and wait. And wait, and wait. Basically, the rest of my friends decided to drive leaving at 8pm, none of them got there until 10:30 cause of the traffic :whip:

Carl Cox was great; he did MC a bit much, but I like British accents :)

Chemical Brothers were phenomenal. Beyond mind-blowing. HeyBoy,HeyGirl, Galvanize, and BlockRockinBeats always sound wonderful on the stage. I couldn't trainspot, but there was a song around 12:45 that blew me away. I think it's on the new CD, so I'll have to find it again.
I really wished I could have seen them in NY last week, but I couldn't swing it with my work schedule, alas.

After that, the rest of the evening was passible. I spent time at the lights for awhile and chatting with some guys who dropped acid. They were trying to explain to me what they were seeing...between two groups of not-sobert people, it was hard. :p

Some of Sharam's tracks were good, some were eh. I avoided PvD (and based on other's, good choice), saw some Benassi (ok, thought he was better at Coachella this year), and Gervais (not bad).
LTJ Bukem was good, but only caught like 10 min of his set.
Missed Mark Knight & Jimmy Van M, but that's how the conflicts play out.

Went to eat afterwards, and then went back to the hotel to chill and smoke (yay for windows that open!) and finally went to bed around 8.

Next week, Justice, Bloc Party, Kinky, Teddybears, and those wacky DJs on Ed Banger at the LA Weekly Detour Festival!

Was amazing.

Chem Bros, Benassi, Carl Cox!!! Missed PVD unfortunately for some reasons :(

But oh well, heard it wasn't THAT great.

Now I'm dying for Monster Massive :disbelief

What I remember of the Chemical Brothers set (in no particular order):
Galvanize
Saturate
We Are the Night
Star Guitar
Do It Again
Believe
Surface to Air
Block Rockin' Beats

I think.

I loved it when sharam played home sweet home and the extended vocals to the one. It kinda sucked at the end when everyone was chanting for an encore and the peeps over there wouldnt let him play one or something. I was really hoping he would drop dreams since i haven't heard that song live.
