So I started new job, and there is this a guy who's leaving the job to work in Edinburgh and he's having a meetup on sunday in some pizzeria. A few of the people from the office will be there (4 confirmed) I don't know which ones though. I don't know him or possibly the people that will be there so well, yet I was invited.
Do I go ? (its very close to my home so I said I might pop in for a minute if I have the time)
Would it be awkward ? or a good way to get to know my work colleagues better ? |

| I try to not go to these types of functions due to an attempt to keep my personal life and my work life separate, but I know a lot of people that do go to these types of things. |

| Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George gets hired while his boss is out of town. He steps in and makes that toast while everyone is looking at him like "WTF?". Go for it. |

hah, I wish, we don't have such varied characters as far as I noticed, although ethnically we do have some people form south america and a Portuguese. |

honestly, i love going out with people from work. it's a great way to get to know your coworkers better and makes being at work a lot more relaxed and laid back. you'll always have stuff to talk about, and if you're working a full-time job and you spend 40 hours a week with all these people it's nice to be able to get to know who they are beyond their professional titles.
but at the same time i somewhat agree with Ben's stance about keeping work and play separate. obviously there are lines that just shouldn't be crossed and you definitely want to avoid any sort of drama in the work place... but as long as you're not ing/dating people you work with or being irresponsible about your job or talking all kinds of about your bosses/coworkers, i don't really see it being that hard to have personal friendships with coworkers.
i'd say go for it, especially since you just started working there. nothing wrong with being social. :) |

| I get where your coming from lucid, my only concern is that its a goodbye party with possibly close colleagues recalling and reflecting on the time spent together, that could be awkward, no ? |

yeah i mean i guess it's a little weird to be invited to a "going away" party for someone you just started working with, but you can do what we do in our dept when we receive an email from corporate announcing that some dude we dont even know is resigning...
"i'm really gonna miss Allan. he was such a great guy!"
"yeah i tried convincing him to stay but he just wasn't interested"
"lets hope he keeps in touch."
