Its a 2002 though...waaaay early for the cat to go out. VW are sensitive and throw codes all the time. Im pretty sure the scan will say something like " Cyl bank 1 lean" or the like. Are you using 93 octane? If you cheap out on the fuel you can upset the ECU. |

I do know that the 1.8T is a good motor.
First question is, how is the high end power? As much as there used to be?
Whether or not that is the case:
Check all of the hoses having to do with the engine's air intake, before and after the turbo... more likely after. Not uncommon for a post turbo intake hose to pop loose as they're under pressure sometimes.
L.E.N are you a part of any VW groups down there? I just got back from helping out with the Bugorama show at Las Vegas Motor Speedway a week ago. I group from socal showed up to help out too: Der Hafen Kafers. Familiar with them? Do anything to the GTI? |

I used to do the carshow thing but got kinda tired of it. I should get back into it, there is a ton of dub heads down here.
Ive done a little to the car (I dont want to highjack the thread but pics work better)

that's what it may be. i have a friend coming over tomorrow to scope it out. i don't with it and usually take it to his shop. (always good to have a mechanic for a friend.)
on the other hand - the high end power is a little low. i took it around the block and it won't speed up as quick. |

That happens to mine with the check engine light. It makes the car run richer to prevent damage. Its like a safe mode. It will bog until 5k rpm then it will wake up. Its normal. Have your friend bring an OBD II scanner and clear the codes. Good as new. |

On what? He didnt enough info on the turbo noise and there are a number of different scenarios on that. The decrease in high end goes hand in hand with the light. Until its scanned its all guessing. VW are known for bad coilpacks, could be that too. Gotta scan. |
