I did OW 7 years ago now in phuket, a great relaxed place to learn. Not done a lot of diving since then apart from 2 years ago, 3 days on a live aboard on the great barrier reef. That was a great holiday, about AUS$100 a day, all gear, meals, cabin.
up to 4 dives a day, up before dawn so you can be in the water at first light, take your pick of 4 dive times during the day and a night dive.
diving walls off the reefs, getting face to face with white tip reef sharks, amazing colours.
Was going to follow up with more regular dives but with my wife being pregant that sort of stopped things.
As for being nervous about 30 metres, once you get comfortable under wated 5-30 meters makes little difference, until you get deep enough to start narcosis. |

| yeah we do our 30m dive in a dynamited quarry so i imagine its just gonna be darker. I'd prefer doing 30m on a reef so then atleast you got stuff to look at. 30m of just green water that keeps getting darker and darker is what worries me lol |

| Oh yes! Scuba diving is so much fun, you'll love it. Just watch out for nasty jellyfish, that's if they have them near you. Jellyfish are not friendly.:( |

I started doing it hardcore about 3 or 4 years ago. You won't regret it. It was seriously a life changing decision for me. Don't worry about your AOW. If you made it through your standard OW test than you're probably pretty comfortable underwater and the depth difference won't matter. AOW doesn't have very many challenging skills exercises. They'll just bring you down to 100ft and make you play with a children's "fit the square piece through the square hole, triangle piece through triangle hole, etc." excercise and time you to show you how nitrogen narcosis can affect your thinking. Personally I don't think nitrogen narcosis even hits you to the point that it's significant until 140ft or so ... but maybe thats because I drink a lot and I'm used to being drunk.
You live in England which has some of the best wreck diving in the world in the North Sea. Of course it's mostly technical diving with doubles tanks and a drysuit which is VERY expensive for training and equipment but if you're dedicated it will be a lot of fun. Otherwise take a short hop to Egypt and dive the red sea. I spent a week diving there earlier this year and it's world class diving. Sharm, Hurghada, and Marsa Alam are great places to go (try to get on a liveaboard). PM me if you have any other questions about skills to focus on or diving in general.

| Got certified at 13....totally worth it. I haven't been on a dive in a few years, but loved it. I bought all the good gear, dive computer, etc...need to get my tank re-VIP'ed so I can get back in it. |

Done all my pool sessions, and had my 1st open water dive in the quarry on Thursday. I absolutely ing loved it! Done 3 dives on Thursday, Got another 3 this Friday which will make me PADI OW diver and half way through my AOW. I'm already looking at speciality courses, and will be doing my Emergency First Response this summer.
For those of you that are qualified, did any of you have problems with mask removal. My friend is absolutely terrified, she took it of 20ft down and froze, she just had her mask in hand, eyes closed holding onto her nose. We're going back hopefully so she can just get that skill signed off. Any problems at all?? |
