It's simply because of the similar cultures. As brits we mostly know who John Howard is, and the other guys pretty much fit in with the kind we have in parliament here, so it's not too far from home in that sense. Ad wise, we all get the same kind of thinking, so the road-tests work. Most of the songs they often copy are international ones, and the "if life is a musical" ones are just amusing, and you can't go wrong with Clive the slightly too loud commuter.
Perhaps as pkc says, standards are dropping, but compared to what we get on tv here, it's head & shoulders above still. Except neighbours
