I don't know where you are getting these facts, I didn't know all DJs of a certain genre mixed a certain number of phrases.
In fact in most cases it would make sense that trance music be comprised of quicker transitions as to keep the energy level high and to avoid ridiculous key clashes that can often occur due to all the melodies/pads.
A lot of minimal DJs just mash the out of tunes so often the phrasing is much much longer and drawn out, as for house music... Guys like Digweed and Masiello like to baby their transitions/mixes and so they last quite long, so wtf?
Broad, general statements are fashionable these days I know, but don't just make stuff up and type it out like it's a fact, hahaha. |

every dj has his own style
if it sounds like a good mix
its a good mix
:P |

| It depends though, long transitions can sometimes bore the out of the dancers, but other times it can build crazy tension which creates a big stir. |

good point, i guess you need to know when you can use it with what tracks and at what stage of your set, etc... |

| Marcus has it right, it's music, if it sounds good, it's good. |

well i wasnt clear about what i said. i dont mean to make broad+fashionable statements lol.. nobody plays out a specific amount of phrases.. maybe i can say i notice it on an average.. ,, all im saying is from the comments above kinker is talking like every trance DJ is a seantyas playing at 140bpm and mixing clearly 4 phrases each time.. i think its obvious and safe to assume to me that you dont listen to any trance/progtrance urself.. which is totally fine... ill agree-to-disagree about "sense that trance music be comprised of quicker transitions " (or why it would make sense to in some kind of formula) to keep the energy levels high/etc.. any armin/pvd/ferry/schulz etc set can consister of alot of prog/electro/house tracks.. some peeps are ignorant to think all trance music is a bunch of cheesed out synth filled energytranceish marcel woods or richard durand tracks that play at 140 :B hehe...
i'm a geek and listen to alot of sets and even study different djs to see who does what and i can agree with you saying minimal dj's mash the out tunes which is okay because it works with the music (really well, example digs essential set from 13th), ..
guys like guetta you wont ever find playing out more than 5 phrases i can almost gurantee from any set ive listened to,.. i dont know about putting masiello playing things out like digs if u listen to any of his sets you will hear a distinctive set of 6 phrases (you can even hear him screwing up queues sometimes and coming in an out and having to restart last minute :P hehe), i dont classify him as house maybe i should have been clear on it ;]
digweed is a special case because he is all mighty and godly :B he runs a minimum of 6 phrases but ive heard him go all the way to 9 thats about a good 2min 20secs to 2min 50secs it just depends on the track when he drops 130bpm bleepy tracks it works really well to milk it..
now all this to say.. my whole point is if you actually listen out to any armin/svd/schulz etc trance/prog trance dj you'll distinctively hear 6 phrases sometimes 7.. anyone who listens to the genre will notice 4 phrases compared to 6 because it will sound like crap especially with synths/proggy tunes.. and i can understand if anybody for instance who listened to digweed, doesnt pick it up immediately and all i can really say to that is that if people dont really follow it (the music/genre) they dont hear the track exitting still in the background.. im pretty sure 84th ave can even back that up he used to listen to the teh omg hands in the air trance djs \o ;)
but um.. ya...lol |

Fair enough.
I know the trancers play lots of house/electro/prog house tunes, but when you're playing really peak time trance bombs it just DOES make sense to keep transitions shorter, to maintain energy.
Same goes with house+electro+prog.
You lose lots of energy when your transitions start taking 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, unless the tunes just REALLY work together beautifully, which does happen but ya... |
