Of course, they're getting no help at all from retailers - but if every parent refused to buy any of the skank costumes and perhaps wrote a letter explaining this decision, the retailers would change their selection quickly enough. Customers hold all the cards, they're just too lazy (I'm sorry - "busy") to play them.
Most parents wait until the very last minute to do this shopping, they're desperate to find costumes for their kids and they'll take whatever's available. When the consumer's primary concern is convenience and minimal effort, retailers can pretty well sell whatever they please.
I could swear there used to be a time when people actually made Halloween costumes... |

Just because a parent enforces something doesn't mean they have to listen. Sure they can leave the house in there PG-13 costume, but 5 minutes later they're in the washroom at their friends house skanking it up.
I don't think you can really blame the parents. Girls just dress like that cause they like the attention from the guys. So ITS YOUR FAULT BOYS!! |

| I think the real issue here is how difficult it must be for the actual hookers on Halloween and how often they must get mistaken for party goers. So tragic. |

First of all, 8-year-old kids are going to have a pretty hard time finding and buying said costume without their parents' knowledge or consent.
You've also implicitly stated that the "good" parent has just sent their kid off to a friend's house and ditched them for the night. I don't think it's very likely that this would happen with an 8-year-old, and if it does, then again, the "good" parent isn't actually so good.
Most importantly, the "bad influence" issue has been around for generations. Part of a parent's responsibility is to make sure their children don't hang out with these ups.
Parents CAN control their kids, especially at that age, and if they're disciplined properly at a young age then they generally won't be total sluts by age 12 (no guarantees, but at least there's a chance). Nothing has changed in the past 50 years to shift the balance of power, it's just that the consequences of half-assed parenting have become much worse. |

Yes, for 13+, if that's what they're doing then you're pretty much hosed as a parent - although parents CAN mitigate that problem by simply not giving their kids assloads of disposable income. A 13-year-old kid still has to acquire this stuff somehow and it's going to be difficult without any money. If they want to get jobs, they can be as slutty as they want - most of them won't want to do that, because working means less time to go around being a slut.

When I was that age, I got $5 per week and was glad to get it. Parents are not obligated to give their kids spending money. |

I kinda agree, but I would say that the stronger forces at work here are the forces of supply and demand. I doubt the retailers suddenly went, "oh let's sluttify our costume line for no reason." The sluttier costumes sold better than the conservative ones, so they shifted to making more and more slutty costumes. So yes, parents are to blame here - they started the trend of buying slutty costumes for kids, the retailers just responded. |
