Advocates of Linux, the free open-source operating system, like to say that buying a standard-issue computer involves a Microsoft Tax, because you have no choice but to pay for Windows. New versions of Linux and inexpensive hardware like the new Everex gPC TC2502 make that tax avoidable.

This computer has a 1.5-gigahertz Via processor, 512 megabytes of memory and an 80-gigabyte hard drive. What makes it stand out, however, is GOS, a version of Linux specially made to run Google applications like GMail and Google Documents. It also runs OpenOffice, an open-source office suite that can handle Microsoft Word documents, and some multimedia applications.

The interface features an intuitive desktop interface with a set of icons. Clicking on the Map icon, for example, brings up Google Maps. The ostensible goal is to move much of the processing from the PC to the Internet.

The gPC is available now at Wal-Mart for $200, including a keyboard and mouse. A monitor costs extra, and the Microsoft Tax is missing entirely.

Jesus, only $200? :wtf:

I mean, sure, it's not exactly a powerhouse, but still.

Interesting.

Any word on a proper Google OS yet? :p

Ubuntu runs enough on a 2ghz p4.

This is destined for fail. Neat idea though!

Via Processor....:stongue:

Unless you want to run just basic word applications and the calculator, it's not going to be of much use.

Mac OSX 10.5?

I kid....still, I haven't heard good things about the VIA processor.

he means Vista. Realistically, it takes a good 350-400 mb of RAM just to run.

the numbers i get from vista home premium on the computers we sell where i work (costco) are around 700MB to run vista, so we started terminating everything until the system was very unstable and crashed, the lowest number we achieved was somewhere around 600, and that was even after we closed explorer.exe, which takes up 30 i think? or 50?

it'll run on a 512 machine, but it sits @ about 70%.

yeah, that would be more correct statement, depends on the system, usually takes up anywhere between ~50 to 70% (idling without terminating any applications as we did):)
