You'd think it'd be different around here but no... every single year we have to witness the "MOTORISTS SURPRISED BY SNOW!"-headlines. First snow falls pretty much the same time every single year. Whoa, what a surprise! |

also, is there anything i should know when switching from 17" rims with wider tires to smaller steel wheels with snow tires? i'm looking at some packages right now on tirerack.com and i'm assuming i'll be good with whatever size they recommend for my vehicle, right? |

If you're in the U.S., best online tire resource (and cheapest tires; if you prefer to go into a shop, you should compare pricing with this site):
www.tirerack.com
I did a quick search (recently went through this whole process for winter tires on my new car) and got the following for you:
http://www.tirerack.com/snow/Winter...03&autoModClar=
I recommend the 15" rims (as opposed to your stock 16") because the 195/65/15 are thinner than your stock 205/55/16. For winter tires, you'll find better traction with thinner tires as opposed to wider rubber for summer tires. Think of the snow tires as thin ice skates, which carve through the ice/snow better than wider skates. Better control.
Anyway, as far as recommendations, my Mom has been happy with her Pirelli Snowsport 210 for her '04 Jetta TDI and I used the same for my previous 2 cars (Civic/Prelude). One of the cheapest and best value for $$$ out there.
However, right now I'm going with Dunlop Winter Sport M3s which are higher-performance tires and very highly recommended among car enthusiast forum members for German performance cars (e.g. Porsche, BMW M3, Audi RS4).
You can see the tire ratings on tirerack.com also:

Good luck! :) |

Nice, you're already a step ahead!
Didn't know you were running 17s...as long as you haven't upgraded your brakes or anything to large-sized ones you should be fine with the 15s I recommended. I believe you had stock 16s, right? And you upgraded to 17s? |

everything on my car is stock. the wheels are the optional 17s, as shown in this photo:

thanks for the help. i saw that tirerack had winter wheel packages in both 15s and 16s for my car, but i wasn't sure what difference it makes. |

Happens here in Ohio too. It's fairly unpredictable as to when the snow will start, but it snows plenty every year. I never understood why every first snowfall here there are approximately one billion wrecks en route to work.
OH GOD SAME AS EVERY YEAR JUST HAPPENED. |
