Mixing: headphones only or headphones & monitors???

Just a quick question...

Do many of you mix using your headphones only i.e. dont use the traditional one ear in/one ear out method????

The majority of the time, I mix using my headphones only. I started mixing like this because the place that I had my first few gigs didnt have a booth monitor. I just got used to ignoring the main speakers in that place and from then on, I always mixed with my headphones only.

Barely any of my mates or the DJs that I play with use this technique and outside of Hernan Cattaneo, I dont know of many other 'nig name' djs who use the headphone only technique.

Ive been DJing like this for over 3 years now and its naturally to me now, but just wondering how many others use this method...

you're not alone

although i do a combination one ear and headphone, kinda half on my ear and half off, enough to clearly hear both

then my 7506's usually stay there until it's time to pick another track

i learned in my parents basement late at night, so it was headphone all the way for me

having a few dodgy gigs to start out with, with bad or no monitors, i favored full on for a while

Yeah, I'm partial to the both on approach as well (everyone in my house goes to bed early). I've tried the other approach but I prefer both on, non-split.

yeah ive played in a few clubs where the mixer has no headphone mix (i.e. xone 62) and used split but im not a big fan on split either...prefer using the headphone mix on the pioneers, denons etc.

i use my cans for cueing and beat matching only. i'd rather not have them on while in the mix.

Use my headphones for beatmatching, and only my headphones none of that 50 50 stuff and for mixing, i use my memory of what the tracks sound ike and base it off that.

i use the one ear method to match the beats in the beginning, use both ears to double check afterwards, then back to one ear during transition.
Pointy
Initially one cup & monitor to get the beats close ~ .5% or so, then both cups headphones to match them properly
EvilTree
Headphones for beatmatching, monitors for transitions, with occasionally headphones going back on for precise pitch bending corrections.

Never liked the 50/50 thing. I can't concentrate trying to listen to both headphone and monitor at same time.
