production using headphones only

i read in the eric prydz interview that hes uses headphone 70% of the time for his songs and that he does all the mixing and mastering himself. well i wanted to know what kind of headphones hes using?! whenever i get a mix sounding awsome on my headphones and then listen to it on moniters or speakers it sounds like . right now im using sennheiser HD 280 pros. ive been doing this for a while so i can get good mixes with moniters and even stereo speakers but as for the headphones they only sound good on the headphones, not "real" speakers. anybody else have this problem? id really like to be able to make good mixes with headphones seeings how i live in a dorm with other people and the acoustics are as well.

Unless you know your headphones really, really well and know how to compensate for the way most headphones exaggerate the sound, then its usually better to hear your mix over monitors. Chances are, he's been doing it that way for so long he knows how to compensate for wearing headphones. Also, it is very possible that the 70% he is talking about is when he is composing and when it comes time to do mixdown he uses monitors.

I do exactly the same thing. i only use my monitors when I'm mixing, most of the time.

You and me both... I have wonderful headphones, but I can't use these monitors, nor do I have an environment suitable for them.

i use the same kind of headphones and this is worrisome. i do not yet have real monitors so these 280's are all i have in my very first attempt to produce a track (ever)... i'll have something previewable in a week or two so you can all laugh at it.

I've been using headphones for production for years. You can get a lot done with them if they're high quality and you know what sounds good through them.

Having said that, I also have excellent monitors and there's no way I'd ever send a mix into the world without some time spent mixing through them as well. Some sounds are very present, sound fine in the headphones, then totally disappear when thrown out to the monitors. Also, for me personally, I have no idea where the bass is at, mixing just in headphones. It can sound nice and full, then I'll go to the speakers and the bass isn't hitting me in the chest. The bass is something that needs to be felt, not just heard. Headphones don't let you feel it.

My general approach is, get the mix set up in the headphones, then go to the speakers, where generally a few sounds will require some major reworking. Once everything sounds fine in the speakers, it sounds great in the headphones as well.

In terms of general music listening, it's almost always through my portable CD player through good quality headphones. Since my point of reference is headphones, currently headphones will be a big part of my creative process as well. But yes, both phones and monitors are necessary for me.

you might need to do some minor tweaking:). ill get something that sounds awsome on the headphones and move over to monitors and go eww.

I have AKG K171s. But I still prefer using monitors most of the time.
I'll use the headphones to check out tracks/sections sometimes to get a fresh perspective...or when its 4am and I worry about neighbours.

i use headphones and 4 speakers. haven't got proper monitors. i find my speakers ideal for the time being. ill get monitors once i can afford them though.

Headphones don't exaggerate the sound if they are true studio headphones with a full frequency range. They need to have a flat sound just like studio monitors, preferably 20hz to 16khz. The ones I use are 8hz-16khz. You shouldn't mix on audiophile or consumer grade headphones, they usually exaggerate the bass end and sometimes the high end too. You won't get an accurate image of the sound.

That is interesting that prydz uses mostly headphones. I use headphones for mixing, and then I always check my mixes on the monitors. Normally the mixes translate well to the monitors. You just have to know your headphones well and how they translate to speakers. I don't master my tracks, and I'm not sure I'd want to do that with just headphones. Most sound engineers use monitors to master. I suppose it can be done on headphones, why not.

Airbase uses mostly his 7506's for productions a bguy who post's on here called Der Mystyk uses only 280's, and his tunes are ing mint.

I find headphones too upfront and so when you produce on them, panning and volumes are way off and the whole mix sopunds weird on speakers, bass is very hard to get right on them.

Some guys can do it though. I can't. lol.
