dont think hawtin is really in prog category. think he's all techno without a doubt, yea maybe a different style of techno (minimal) but i'd have a hard time labelling him as a progressive dj. minimal prevails! :D

A friend of my gave me the whole KAZANTIP 2005 set (4.7gigs) of music from all thier dance floors, there is lots of PLASTIKMAN and HAWTIN there and its just so minimal I don't understand how you can enjoy it lol..

I think most rationally minded people on this board dont hate on somebody for being popular, but are able to make a distinction based on how they achieved it
eg. crappy pop vs quality pop

For EDM artists:

there's the good way...Prodigy, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Moby...

the not so good way...Tiesto, AVB, PVD...

And then of course there's Oakenfold

hmm achieve it? thats only one persons own way to distinct whether a dj/group is better..apples and oranges so to speak.. you just compared what i would call electronic/electronica dj's to trance/progressive-trance djs... how is that even possible.. that just means you like one genre over another.. whats ur own justification to be able to say for example.. paul van dyk/armin van buuren sucks... *waves chemical brothers flag*.. see the point to that is that isnt the status quo, know what i mean?

robbie, it all comes back to the fact that music is music, and some people will not back down from their opinion, you can't prove anything to these people(in this case the househeads, they will eat you alive to prove that "coke is better then pepsi") So don't even go into that argument:)

some people's musical tastes just evolve, or starts to be different, i was with you the first time i heard minimal or even tec house, i was like i can you enjoy it, with time i just found it interesting, always different, i guess you develop an ear for it.....

this type of music has an advantage over trance, where producers don't rip off every synth or element from other songs and make them all sound the same, for me its diverse, something trance nowadays cannot offer me (personally speaking)

Robbie, Im not dumb enough to let my taste bias a discussion like this. I'm not trying to compare styles or convince you which one is better. What I am comparing are the edm artists that made it 'big' in the 90's (first group) vs 00's (second group).

The first group became popular by creating quality music that had a huge impact on the scene, which resulted in them getting popular.

The second group made crappy pop music in order to get popular. See the difference? None of the big three trance guys have created anything as remotely revolutionary when compared to the first group (tiesto came closest, but got lazy and greedy). And, yes, it basically comes down to the fact that the big 3 are primarily djs, not producers (and thats fine btw).

What it comes down to is the big 3 havnt done anything to justify their supposed popularity artistically (again, tiesto comes closest). I think this is why EDM as a whole has been a bit of a laughing stock in the music world in the past 5+ years. There needs to be another 'jilted generation' or 'play' to rescue any dignity thats left, if any.

I think that's like asking that there isn't a mac vs. pc war..

though I am a trance head, I enjoy a lot of house... So i do think there is a happy medium lol.

Anyways, back to PvD...and just in general, why are people so scared of things becoming mainstream? (this isn't an attack, but rather a real queation, i'm curious).
