Organizing mp3s?

How do you guys do it? At the moment I've just got mp3s of all kinds of genres and ages scattered about my hard drive, I need a way to sort them out, how do you lot do it? I'm thinking maybe a sort of digital DJ crate then just put everything in there by genre.

i tend to stack them. It's ok so long as you don't put all the 320k ones on top.

I organize them slowly as to not make mistakes.

five folders -

prog/techier house

minimal/tech

club/electro house

trance

random crap

the first four are further broken down into folders of 'Pre-2002', and every year since 2003, 2004, etc.

The yearly folders are broken down into months 'Jan', 'Feb', etc.

...the random crap folder... well it's random.

If I don't have the month in which a certain song was released I use the month in which I got a hold of it.

Simple to find a track because I just have to remember the year and month, instead of everything else. "Ohh yeah that's Prog January 2004!" then you go to that folder and seek through some 10-15 tracks instead of a load.

I find this system awesome, but I spent 2 hellish months organizing it nightly back in sophomore year in college. However it's rewarding once you do get it done because as soon as you get a track you can file it away easily. Thank you beatport for including complete date of release.

Ideally I want it to be like this;

PHP:

I have it down to EDM, but no year and genre. Too much work.

Use Tag&Rename to help you tag stuff, rename mp3s, grab info, ect ect.

i have all beat-driven/mixable edm organised into folders by year, then one big 'other' folder containing indie/chillout/pop & the likes. then one folder for sets, and another for temporary/stuff to sort/stuff to tag. i've been tempted to sort them further into styles but it's a pain jumping between folders to get from one year to another as it is (i used to just have them all in one folder but it got a bit excessive to handle)

I don't really see the need to organise - if I need something I just search it through the playlist that has everything in it. Takes about 2 seconds.
