Yes, I know. I am confy enough with Ableton to go in public now...but just need to do three things first...
1. I would really like to practice on a Xone:92 mixer. I've only used and old beatup Pioneer DJM-300 Ish let me borrow. I don't want to come in and look like a fool trying to get use to the feel of the Xone.
2. I need to update my library. I had a big lull there of paying attention to releases because of work trips, being sick, and othe priorities. Finally just started working on getting some new stuff this week. Still need to get more but working on it. And once I get them, really need to learn the structure of the full tracks so I don't look like a fooll during transitions. I really try to focus on good phrase-matching and try to avoid just making sure I fade into each track smoothly...I could do that, but then a lot of the transitions could sound rushed or just generic. Really been focusing on using loops to make transitons seem smoother. The big risk in all of this is that if I mess up or start a track at the wrong point. my transition could sound tiesto-esque...WONKY. lol.
3. I need to take the time an normalize all my tracks so peak volume is the same throughout all of them instead of tweaking the gain within ableton one-by-one and eyeing it by the meters. Will make things so much easer! Hehe...
In the end, while there will be a lot of winging going on I want to be as prepared as possible so I only look somewhat like a fool and not like a complete idiot. I'm thinking about wearing a disguis lol.
So yeah, those three things. Other than just updating the library and getting to know the track structures, it's not major stuff. I could wing it more and not practice on the Xone mixer once and normalizing everything is a matter of me not being lazy lol.
And would prob like to start off on a local night so I don't have the pressure to open perfectly for a major headliner. Would just like to get my feet wet first. Well, there are some headliners who I would like OH HELL YEAH I'll OPEN FOR HIM to right out of the gate, but very few lol.

Oh yeah, forgot to note that I also need to know what style is expected from me (yes Taj, if/when you ever book me, especially as an opener, give me direction. It's your job! Don't just say play what you want...actually would like to know how the headliner would like the opener to lead into him. That DJ just better not want straight up generic house, though...remember when trance headliners would often want that, though I actually can't recall it really being demanded anytime in the last few years. I love house, don't get me wrong...just HATE it when a trance DJ wants the opener to play slow house so they aren't overshadow. , I've seen headliner's slot time delayed because while the opener is playing house, he is playing it too fast or hard (we are talking high 120s to 130 max here lol) for the headliner who of course gets to the club like 5 minutes before he is supposed to come on...LAME...so the opener has to play longer while he brings the tone of the music down. Talk about the death of a vibe in the crowd. But again, I haven't seen a headliner straight up come in and demand this in a long time (though I have seen the promoter from time to time tell the opener to adjust, but on his own accord and not because the headliner complained).
Longest parenthesis evar!!
Anyhow, need to know because I am lame and when I am going through and getting tracks for my libary I am a bit all over the place in styles and just buy what I like...and since I am basically rebuilding my libary since most of it is a bit old, I might not have a good base of tracks for any particular style/build-up that I will need for my set, so when the time comes if I know what type of style is expected from me, I can make sure I have a nice number of tracks in that style lined up!
Holy run-on-sentence batman! |

oh no what's going on now.
I'll try to whip a short mix this today or tomorrow just using some of the recent tracks I got. Dunno how the structure will sound, though...but just to give an idea of some toonage. I do have a series of tracks that are maybe a tad old (3-6 months, maybe a little more) but I don't know if I've heard them in a club in SF yet actually (then again, I am not able to get out every weekend these days). Also have this one track that came on in late 2006 that I really really want to hear in a club cause I think it'd destroy a room at the right time if the room has the right energy. It's actually a house track, but think it can be worked in multiple styles of sets
. Gonna try to come to Ten tonight, but chances are I won't be able to get out of the house. |

If you can make it that would be :whip: Remember Dave its not about perfection its about telling a story. A story of your heart & emotions fed through your music. (i know its kinda corny but sooooo true):wtf: |

Soooo true. That's why I believe in a good flow within a DJ set. Transitions are important not to break the flow but a set that takes everyone into a journey makes it an unforgetable night for the clubbers.
I also play for the crowd. As much as I want to play what I want which sometimes varies, I try to feed the crowd what they want for the evening with a touch of my own style. I actually recorded my set from my Bday last Saturday which I will post somewhere in a thread later. Most peeps here might call it cheese or too hard but that evening I thought it was proper. It was my BDay and all my friends were there to celebrate it so I played a bit harder. Even Rizo commented that I looked like the Asian version of Steve (The ThrillSeekers) because I was so animated like the Man -> Steve !!!
He doesn't just play............ he parties with the crowd :whip: :whip: |
