I recently came across this entry in one of my aqquaintence's journals on Purerave.com. I came to Canada when I was 4 so when I read this, it made me pretty angry.
I just wanted to see what some of your reactions/opinions are to it.

Over the last year I have become quite upset with immigrants!! They come here and get $2,500--$3,000 a month to survive, a minimum of $25,000 to start a business that they don't have to pay back, health care, dental care and much more. I've been a working Canadian and I get NOTHING!! People who were in war for this country are lucky if they get a $1,200 monthly pension and these ******s coming over here are trying to change our laws and freedoms, like not being allowed to have a Christmas tree, it's now a holiday tree if that is even allowed. IMMIGRANTS!! LEt them fend for themselves in their own country just as we must in our own country!!
I realize some of you may or may not come from an immigrant family. Rest assured I hold nothing against you. It's the ignorent people that bug me. |

Maybe Canadians should have more babies so that the government doesn't have to encourage immigration to keep the population steady? Anyways, its a stupid argument against immigration, Canadians get plenty of benefits too, it's just they usually have no clue where to go get them or what benefits they have even though the Canadian government is one of the more accessible ones in the world. |

I'm sorry but, that just isn't entirely true.
The Canadian gov. has many barriers to prevent Canadians from milking them (as they should) and more often than not, immigrants seem to be given preferential treatment, it's widely known that if you are a cripple/immigrant/single mom/live on your own without parents help/etc etc you are fast-forwarded through the various systems, especially when it comes to student/business loans and what not.
I believe immigration in Canada should be handled more like it is in the USA, (despite all the illegal immigration nonsense), the USA's system is very unforgiving and although there are plenty of opportunities in that country, it is not a free ride.
Also, the Canadian gov. has no backbone when it comes to deportations, they need to exercise that power more often instead of allowing these lengthy and tax dollar consuming appeals processes for every single illegal immigrant that comes here without permission, or overstays their working/school visa. |

Firstly, I don't see anything wrong with fasttracking disadvantaged groups of people. The US's immigration system would be the worse pick as an effective immigration system. If you are going to let people into the country, and them do not give them any type of support when they are entering into a place that is completely unknown to them, they will simply fall into poverty or will be stuck doing low wage labour intensive jobs. I don't believe this is the right way of treating someone that you have allowed to come stay into the country, not to mention that you are decreasing the general welfare in the country because these people will be stuck in the lower social levels. It's not like this is not already the case, there are plenty of cab drivers here in Vancouver that have PHD's. I believe Canada's immigration system is one of the reasons that Canada has had a fairly successful integration of immigrants into the general society. Also, the reason 'regular' Canadians, i.e. Canadians born in Canada that don't qualify for fast tracking don't have access to the same resources could be explained by the expectation by the government that they come from more stable environments and are better able to fend for themselves. I don't see this as an unreasonable assumption. Obviously it is not ALWAYS true, but because it is true on average, it saves the government money and makes for more effective governance, i.e. helping the most amount of people without ballooning costs.
Obviously there are always areas to be bettered, but I do think that the paranoia present in the poster's quote is unduly.
Secondly, I would agree with the deportation bit. Obviously people should go through the proper channels to acquire their landed immigrant status. |

I am an immigrant (now a citizen) and I am angry, too, but for a different reason. Me and my family did not receive this program, which could've really helped - since my father worked endless hours as his first job at recycling plant making minimum wage and developed serious health problems as a result, to get established in Canada. At the same time I am angry that Canadian citizens get left out as well.
This doesnt apply to all immigrants. My parents came in early 1990s when they probably didnt have this program.
I do know some immigrants who get the 2000-3000 bucks a month to help with rent, food, etc. - but they're very qualified families. And there's a limit as to the period of time they'll be receiving that money (6 months). |

| I don't think any immigrant should be receiving more money than what a Canadian citizen makes at minimum wage. |

Speaking as a college grad struggling to pay rent... it's easier said than done. :(
But no, I haven't applied for welfare or anything like that. Just more student loans. :( :( |

And they'll disappear with time once you get that first job.
From one who's been there and paid their way as they went along, let me tell you, 'It's possible'.
Best of luck! :D |

Can you get more specific? If you referring to me, I have never been on welfare and I do not want to go on it. Its would be an embarassment to me and my friends. |
