buying a new car...need some help

currently I drive a Solstice GXP and I got a 97 Cavalier sitting around. I'm looking to buy my mom a new car, she prefers Honda/Toyota, and it's got to be new. I'm most likely going to be financing this – looking at 06-07 sedan models, nothing fancy, but something decent for everyday type of use.

any suggestions would be great.

I bought my Honda Civic 1998 for $5000 from the autotrader mag...The mag you get from any gas station, not the free ones.

150K upon purchase.....

Plus its good on gas fills up the tank in 31.00 to 32.00 dollars avg.

Id go for used, honestly after keeping the car for year you'd be a lot more appreciative of buying something nice like an Acura TL 2004 or newer with super low miles than lets say a new anything for that price. I drive acuras and think they are the best car for what you pay.

But if you have to buy new Id buy a civic or rsx.

As much as i hate suggesting this, going to the states and buying a brand new car right now is so much cheaper than buying here. (even after the taxes you pay at the border). (and it makes no difference that the dollar is almost the same)
I.e. a 2007 honda civic costs 27-28$k here, and 20.5k$ in the states...

anyways, my suggestion for a mom car would be honda civic (i drive one, though i am not a mom, and they're great - good on gas and lots of room).
Another good one is Toyota Corolla, however they are a little bit bigger...(more powerful too)

I agree with you emonster4life, but in this case, it's gotta be new.

buying in the states is out of question, for a lot of reasons - and frankly, from what I understand it's a lot of hassle, and I can't see myself doing that.

anyway, yeah I was looking at the Corolla, Civic and the Camry. but i'm leaning more toward the 07/08 Civic Sedan...

should I be looking at any other models or are these three pretty much what I have to work with? cause it seems that way from where I sit

I would suggest looking at the 08 Impreza. They start around $23000 and are just a great all around car. Go and test drive one at least and you'll see what I am talking about.

I have test drove a lot of different cars lately(civic, corolla, jetta) and the Impreza definitely came out on top for feel and comfort.

i dont think you're limited to those options, but they are good ones. You could always look at subarus, acuras, hyundai, etc..
The Camry and Corolla are generally bigger and burn a little more gas i think (heavier, bit bigger engines, etc).. But they are a bit more luxurious in some ways than the civics (at least from a physical point of view)(and this is totally subjective)
Both hondas and toyotas have good reliability, so that's something you don't have to worry as much about.

Another awesome car on gas and getting around is the smart car! :D though, not as safe haha And those run for about 23K...

get a hybrid

The Camry and the Civic are TOTALLY different classes of car, so not sure why you'd go for a Camry, if you're looking for something in the size of a civic. I can suggest the Mazda3, they are fairly nice, good reliable engines, but suck a bit more gas than the Civic or Corolla (which BTW are basically the same class). I would really stay away from American in that small car class segment, especially if you are financing, but there is a lot of very affordable choice there as well. Other than that, stay away from Hyundai, their small cars are just crap, regardless of what people seem to believe. I can also suggest you take look at Subaru, either an 07 imprezza or legacy.

The new Toyota Corolla's (due to come out in early 2008 AFAIK) are highly improved lookswise... a great deal less bland -- they look so much nicer. Love the new look!

Really enjoy the streamlining and overhaul of the Toyota Matrixes too!

ANd then of courses, there's my favourite, THE YARIS!! :D

I love my little ride. She's so practical and fuel efficent... and looks so unique. Perfect for me.
