moving to detroit

so i recently came across an opportunity that could potentially land me in either nyc or detroit. obviously, nyc is awesome. however, it would appear that the electronic music scene in detroit is quite thriving. has anyone lived in ny and now detroit that would be able to compare/contrast the two as far as clubbing goes? and just how ghetto is detroit...?? i live in philly now, and its pretty bad here. i wonder if it would just be like where im at now, which i suppose i could live with.

I lived in the Detroit area pretty much my whole life and just recently moved to Chicago. Honestly with Detroit it really depends on what area you live in. Unless you live right downtown I wouldn't recommended living in the City. Even then its hard to say do it since there are no grocery stores, bums everywhere and the taxes are crazy.

If you are looking to live in Metro Detroit there are some nice areas but it just depends on were your working and how much you are willing to spend.

The music scene is ok with a big split between the more underground and club stuff. You have DEMF every year which is one of the best EDM festivals in the World so that is always a plus. You have things going on every single weekend however your choices can be very limited and there is a dwindling number of venues that seem to be used.

All in all it’s not that bad however If I had to pick I would go with NYC obviously. The problem with Detroit is that as much as everyone likes to act like its turning around its not. The economy is complete crap, the patch work downtown may look nice but knowbody is ever there and it is only 2% of the whole city. The crime is horrible. But personally I dont think it would be much different from Philly but I have only been there once.

I love it here in Chicago and honestly am glad I left if that says anything. Hope that helps let me know if you end of moving out there because I can be a wealth of information.

Don't move to Detroit...trust me on this. I've lived in NYC my whole life and moved to Michigan last August. If you're planning to move, I would recommend moving to Sterling Heights or Shelby township (Macomb county is great). I've transferred here when the company I work for had openings last year, I rent a house with 2 of my cousins up in a quiet suburban area in Macomb. If you're not making decent wage (35k+), I'd recommend renting an apartment in either Sterling Heights or Shelby. A one bedroom ranges anywhere from $450 to about $600 a month, and the people here are real nice. Crime is really low and the police around here don't around.

The only reason I'm sticking around Michigan for a little bit longer is because of my job+salary and time I get to spend with my cousins. You don't want to live anywhere below 14 mile road, it's really ed up from there on , especially between 6 mile road and 10 mile. I wouldn't live in a house in Detroit if they gave it to me for free, crime is ridiculous down there, #1 on the FBI chart this year.

Detroit is the only city where I've seen abandoned high-rises.

all the EDM in the world couldn't make me live there....

after living in Chicago my whole life, I'm done with ghetto.

Honestly peace n trance about the last place I would recommend you to move would be the east side. People up in that area are fricken weird as hell and every knows it.

If you want more of an urban lifestyle look into Royal Oak or Ferndale. If you are looking for more of the suburb sort of thing look into Farmington Hills, Novi, Livonia. Also some parts of Dearborn are not too bad as well as Allen Park if you are on a budget. Rochester Hills is a nice area but is almost to close to east side places like Warren, Sterling heights, Roseville, Harperwoods … uggg .. I get wierded out just thinking about it, lol.

All of this really depends on were your work is going to be though. That is going to be the main key as far as what area to live in, just don’t live on the east side.

Yes Haider I think Detroit might set the record for the most high rises that are vacant. A couple of my friends have lofts and apartments downtown which are actually really nice and they have never had any problems. However when it comes time to buy groceries of anything of that nature you have to track back into the suburbs in order to do so because there really isn’t anything there.

I know what you mean Quadlow, I only moved to east side of Macomb because of my job location. The people are weird and nice and humble at the same time. I'm still getting used to the weird personalities of some of my coworkers. I was born and raised in the Bronx, imagine how the I feel. They love the way I pronounce my vowels , especially the o's and a's. Oakland county is one of the top counties in the U.S. and unless this guy is caking it, I wouldn't recommend it. He would probably
like the Troy area, I like the 14 mile stretch past Dequindre, great shopping area and some of the people there can dress. People in Macomb generally look like they all shop at Walmart for their gear.

How do you like Chicago btw, I visited there once a few years back, but it was for a funeral. was only there for two days, did a little sight seeing. Reminded me of NY , only a little cleaner. Now you can hit up all the hot clubs there.

Yeah honestly I don’t knot what they feed people there but I have a pretty good idea its babies. Honestly I think they keep having kids so they can feed the others ones it. That is about how weird they are up there, always though, lol.

I absolutely love Chicago so far. Honestly I have wanted to move here for about 5 years and I'm glad it finally happened. It really is a cleaner, friendlier NYC personally. They are both great but I feel more at home here.

If you could actually read past a third grade level you would see that he is probably moving to NYC but hasn’t found out yet. Next time instead of trying to be a smart ass pick up a book and read. It’s amazing how they let kids like you pass anything further then the fifth grade.

You know, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you were some uneducated hick from the middle of nowhere in Illinois.
